Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of Julian Duval

Forty-eight hours later, the war room inside Gabriel Lancaster’s Fifth Avenue penthouse was completely silent.

Sunlight poured through the massive bay windows overlooking Central Park. Khloe sat at the head of a twenty-seat marble conference table, a cup of decaf rooibos tea steaming beside her tablet. She wore a cream cashmere sweater that draped comfortably over her bump, her face completely composed.

Gabriel stood behind her, his hands resting gently on her shoulders.

Opposite them sat Alan Sterling, the chief litigator for Lancaster Global, and Sarah Lin, head of crisis intelligence.

"The Australian leak hit thirty minutes ago," Sarah said, tapping her screen. A projection on the wall displayed an overseas tabloid article:

**"EXCLUSIVE: THE BILLIONAIRE'S MIRACLE OR A CALCULATED FRAUD? Medical Records Leak Raises Shocking Questions About Khloe Bennett's High-Society Pregnancy."**

The article detailed Khloe’s past treatments, quoting anonymous "medical sources" claiming that natural conception was a clinical impossibility, heavily implying that Gabriel was being manipulated by an ambitious ex-wife seeking a historic payout.

Khloe looked at the screen. She didn't cry. She didn't flinch.

Two years ago, this would have destroyed her. She would have locked herself in the master bathroom for three days, drowning in the shame Julian had spent years cultivating in her bones.

Now? She felt nothing but cold, clinical disgust.

"Julian," Khloe said softly. "Only Julian had those clinic files. Cedars-Sinai required both spouses to sign for the archiving of those records during our divorce."

"It wasn't Julian directly," Sarah Lin clarified, pulling up a secondary document. "We tracked the digital fingerprint of the upload. The IP address resolves to a burner proxy registered in West Hollywood, paid for by a corporate credit card belonging to Fontaine Media LLC."

"Dalia," Khloe said, shaking her head with a dry laugh. "The girl truly is an amateur."

Gabriel’s fingers tightened on Khloe’s shoulders. The temperature in the room plummeted. When Gabriel spoke, his voice was frighteningly calm.

"Alan," Gabriel said.

"Yes, Mr. Lancaster?" the litigator answered instantly.

"I want the Department of Justice notified of a federal HIPAA violation involving interstate wire fraud. File the civil suit against Dalia Fontaine in the Southern District of New York by noon. Seek fifty million dollars in punitive damages for intentional infliction of emotional distress."

"Consider it filed," Alan said, typing rapidly.

"Wait," Khloe said, raising her hand.

Gabriel paused, looking down at her. "Khloe, they weaponized your pain. I am going to erase them."

"I know," Khloe said, turning her head to meet his gaze. Her eyes were fierce, brilliant, and completely unafraid. "And I love you for protecting me. But you don't use a sledgehammer when a scalpel will do the job with far more elegance."

Gabriel studied her for a moment, then a slow, admiring smile softened the hard lines of his mouth. "What are you thinking, my love?"

Khloe turned back to Sarah Lin. "The Duval Dynamics board meeting is scheduled for two o’clock this afternoon, correct?"

"Yes," Sarah replied. "Julian called an emergency session to address the maturity of the eighty-four million dollar notes."

"And the board doesn't know who owns the notes yet?"

"They know it’s an Ascend subsidiary, but they don't know the exact corporate governance structure," Sarah said.

Khloe smiled. It was the smile of an economic grandmaster who had seen twelve moves ahead while her opponent was still admiring his opening pawn.

"Gabriel," Khloe said, her voice silky and decisive. "When you purchased those notes through Delaware, who did you assign as the managing director of that subsidiary?"

Gabriel’s smile widened into something breathtakingly dangerous. "You, Khloe. It was your birthday present last month. You own one hundred percent of the voting power."

Khloe stood up from the table, smoothing the fabric of her cream sweater over the beautiful, stubborn curve of her stomach.

"Order the car, Sarah," Khloe said, her voice ringing like a silver bell. "I think it’s time I attended my first Duval Dynamics board meeting in two years."

At 1:55 p.m., the boardroom of Duval Dynamics was an absolute madhouse.

Julian sat at the head of the table, sweating through a fresh white shirt. Around him, eight board members—veteran venture capitalists and tech founders—were screaming at each other.

"We have to issue emergency shares!"

"At what valuation, Julian? The stock is down twenty-two percent since the morning headlines!"

"Lancaster is going to liquidate us on Monday! If we file Chapter 11, our institutional reputations are dead!"

"Quiet!" Julian roared, slamming his fist onto the table. "Everyone shut up! I have the situation under control. The smear campaign against Lancaster’s fiancée will force them to the negotiating table by tonight! They can't afford the PR blowback!"

The boardroom doors swung open with a resounding thud.

Every head turned.

Khloe walked into the room.

She wasn't wearing a gown. She wore a tailored charcoal suit with a loose silk blouse that framed her baby bump with absolute dignity. Her heels were low, her posture regal, and she carried a single black leather portfolio under her arm.

Behind her walked Alan Sterling and two private security officers.

Julian rose from his chair so fast it tipped backward, crashing onto the carpet. "What the hell is this? Khloe? Security! Get her out of here! This is a closed board meeting!"

"Sit down, Julian," Khloe said calmly, walking to the empty chair directly opposite him at the far end of the long conference table.

"You have no standing here!" Julian yelled, his voice cracking with hysteria. "You are trespassing on private corporate property! Alan, you know better than this!"

Alan Sterling didn't blink. He stepped forward and placed a heavy stack of legal documents in front of Arthur Vance’s replacement on the board, the lead independent director, Thomas Wright.

"Mr. Wright," Alan said crisply. "These documents certify that Khloe Bennett is the sole managing director and beneficiary of Aegis Holdings LLC. Aegis Holdings currently owns eighty-four million dollars in senior secured convertible debt issued by this company."

Thomas Wright rapidly scanned the signatures. His jaw dropped. He looked up at Khloe, then across at Julian with pure disgust.

"Julian," Wright whispered, his voice trembling with fury. "You idiot. You absolute idiot."

"What?" Julian stammered, looking around the room. "What is it?"

"She doesn't just own the debt, Julian," Wright said, slamming the folder onto the table. "Under Section 8 of the credit agreement you signed last year, the managing director of the senior secured note holder has the right to occupy an observer seat and call an immediate operational audit in the event of public corporate misconduct."

Khloe sat down smoothly, folding her hands over the black portfolio.

"Good afternoon, gentlemen," Khloe said, her voice clear, melodic, and terrifyingly precise. "Let's talk about Duval Dynamics."

"Khloe, you can't do this!" Julian begged, leaning over the table, all his arrogance evaporating into pathetic, sniveling desperation. "You helped me start this company! You wrote the white papers!"

"I did," Khloe agreed, opening her portfolio. "And because I wrote the original architecture, Julian, I know where you cut corners after the divorce."

She pulled out a single sheet of paper and slid it toward Thomas Wright.

"That," Khloe said, "is a forensic analysis of your logistics routing algorithm. Julian claimed to have solved the latency issue six months ago, securing your Series B extension. He didn't. He outsourced the backend processing to an unvetted offshore server farm in Belarus, violating three separate federal data-privacy compliance regulations."

A horrified silence blanketed the room.

Julian looked like he had been shot through the heart. His eyes darted around the table, but not a single director would look at him.

"If the SEC opens an investigation—which they will, by 4:00 p.m. today—this company's valuation drops to zero," Khloe said evenly. "However, Aegis Holdings is prepared to offer you an alternative."

Thomas Wright leaned forward eagerly. "What alternative, Ms. Bennett?"

Khloe looked directly at Julian. Her gaze was as cold as deep space.

"Julian Duval resigns as CEO, effective immediately," Khloe declared. "He surrenders his super-voting shares. He leaves the premises within thirty minutes, accompanied by building security. In exchange, Aegis Holdings will forgive twenty million dollars of the debt, assume majority governance, and protect the remaining shareholders from bankruptcy."

"No!" Julian screamed, tears of pure rage spilling down his cheeks. "This is my company! My name is on the building! You can't take this from me!"

Thomas Wright stood up. He didn't look at Julian. He looked at Khloe.

"All in favor of accepting the resignation of Julian Duval and approving the Aegis restructuring?" Wright called out.

Every single hand at the table went into the air.

Seven seconds.

It took seven seconds to strip Julian Duval of everything he had spent a decade building on a foundation of stolen credit and broken promises.

Khloe stood up. She closed her portfolio.

May you like

"Julian," she said, looking down at the broken man slumped over the mahogany table. "You have twenty-nine minutes left to pack your personal belongings. I suggest you start with the desk."
