Chapter 40 - The Blackout Protocols

The sudden plunge into darkness sent a collective wave of panic through the remaining mercenaries. In the suffocating blackness of the sub-basement vault, the heavy breathing of armed men echoed against the reinforced concrete walls. Viktor slammed his useless rifle against the ground in sheer frustration, his face contorted with rage as he fumbled for a tactical flashlight on his vest. The beam cut through the dust-choked air, illuminating the impassive, cold face of Khloe standing only a few feet away.

"You think a localized power grid failure stops us?" Viktor snarled, his voice laced with venom as he drew a heavy tactical combat knife from its sheath. "The whole complex is wired with redundant diesel generators. They’ll kick in within thirty seconds, and when they do, every wall in this room becomes a firing squad."

Khloe didn't blink. She didn't flinch. Her hand remained steady, the twenty-carat diamond ring catching the faint, residual blue pulse of the electromagnetic lock behind her, casting an ethereal, predatory shimmer across her features. She looked less like a mother carrying the heir to a trillion-dollar empire and more like a sovereign executioner standing amidst the ruins of her enemies' ambitions.

"Thirty seconds is an eternity when you're playing chess with a ghost, Viktor," Khloe replied, her voice smooth, dangerously calm, and cutting straight through the tension in the room. "Did you honestly believe Julian and your little Zurich syndicate were the only ones keeping track of the deep-sea accounts? My father didn't just build a foundation; he built a cage. And you've all been walking around inside it, thinking you held the keys."

Before Viktor could lunge forward, a high-pitched mechanical whine echoed from deep within the walls. It wasn't the sound of backup generators kicking in. It was the terrifying, rhythmic thrum of high-pressure hydraulic vents releasing nitrogen gas. A thick, freezing fog began to pour from the overhead ceiling vents, rapidly filling the subterranean chamber with a dense, obscuring mist that swallowed the flashlights' beams whole.

"Gas!" one of the mercenaries screamed, dropping his weapon and clawing desperately at his tactical mask. "It's a suppression system! Get to the seals!"

Chaos erupted. Blinded and choking, the heavily armed men collided with one another, stumbling against the obsidian pillars and steel consoles. Viktor swore violently, slashing blindly into the fog, but his blade met only empty air. Through the swirling white mist, Khloe glided effortlessly, her movements guided by a quiet, absolute certainty that terrified even Eleanor, who stood pressed against the far wall, watching her daughter-in-law command the battlefield with terrifying precision.

The heavy steel doors at the far end of the vault suddenly groaned. A deep, mechanical click echoed through the floorboards, followed by the sound of heavy pneumatic bolts sliding back one by one. But the doors didn't open to the outside corridor. Instead, a series of hidden floor panels hissed open beneath the mercenaries' feet, revealing a pitch-black descent that dropped straight down into the subterranean river network beneath the estate.

"No! Grab the ledgers!" Viktor roared, lunging toward the central console where the primary hard drives were housed, but his boots slipped on the frost-covered stone.

Khloe stepped to the edge of the descending platform, looking down at the desperate, flailing men. She raised two fingers to her ear, tapping the sleek, titanium communication earpiece that had remained hidden beneath her dark hair all evening.

"Clean sweep, Marcus," she said softly into the receiver. "Secure the perimeter. Let's show Zurich what happens when they try to buy a crown that isn't for sale."
