Chapter 33 - The Archives of the Omitted

The top of the elevator car shrieked as the thermal torch sliced through the remaining steel bolts, and a heavy iron boot dropped onto the roof.
"Gabriel," Viktor’s amplified voice echoed down the shaft, cold and detached. "You can’t outrun the foundation of Vance Global. Open the hatch, or we drop the gas."
Gabriel didn't hesitate. With a violent heave, he wrenched the emergency hatch of the elevator open just as a hiss of white vapor began to pool from the vents above. Pulling Khloe up with superhuman strength, he hoisted her through the narrow opening into the damp, cavernous darkness of Sub-Level 15, hauling himself up behind her just as the floor below was flooded with paralytic gas.
They scrambled across a rough-hewn stone floor, coughing slightly as the residual gas touched their lungs. As their eyes adjusted to the dim emergency lighting, Khloe realized they were no longer inside a modern corporate skyscraper. The walls here were made of jagged, unpolished granite, reinforced with rusted iron beams bearing stamps from the early 1900s.
"Where are we?" Khloe whispered, her hand instinctively rubbing her lower back as a dull ache radiated from the stress of the descent.
"The bedrock beneath Manhattan," Gabriel replied, scanning the intersecting stone corridors with a flashlight he had pulled from his tactical jacket. "My grandfather built this network during the Prohibition era to launder the family's shipping empire into legitimate capital. When the Zurich Trust formed, they sealed it off—or so I was told."
He grabbed Khloe’s hand, leading her down a narrow corridor lined with floor-to-ceiling metal filing cabinets covered in a thick layer of dust. The labels on the drawers bore dates stretching back nearly a century: *1924-1930: Shipping Manifests*, *1945-1952: Political Acquisitions*, *1978-1985: The Swiss Ledger*.
Khloe stopped dead in her tracks, her flashlight beam catching a single, freshly opened drawer near the center of the aisle. The file inside was labeled with a single name in crisp, modern ink: *Khloe V. Vance.*
Gabriel froze, the color draining from his face entirely as he saw the folder. He dropped to his knees, ripping the manila file open. Inside were not just her recent background checks from her time with Julian Duval, but ultrasound scans, medical histories from her pregnancy, and high-resolution photographs of her childhood home in Ohio taken weeks *before* she had ever met either Julian or Gabriel.

"They've been tracking you long before you walked into Julian’s gala," Gabriel whispered, his voice trembling as he stared at a document stamped with the Zurich High Council’s red seal. "You weren't just a random woman from a boutique design firm, Khloe. You were selected."
