Chapter 28 - Whispers in the Gallery

Later that evening, as the gala wound down and the VIP guests retired to the private terrace overlooking Central Park, Khloe stepped away from the crowd to catch her breath in the quiet art gallery adjoining the grand ballroom.

The walls were lined with priceless masterworks—oil paintings of old New York aristocracy, marble busts of historical titans, and gilded frames reflecting the soft amber glow of wall-mounted sconces.

Khloe walked over to a massive floor-to-ceiling oil painting depicting the Manhattan skyline at dusk. She adjusted her diamond pendant, letting out a soft sigh of profound relief. The trials were over. Dalia was serving her twenty-year sentence. Julian and Harrison were locked away in federal and international penitentiaries. Helena’s syndicate had been systematically dismantled by the DOJ and Swiss intelligence.

She had won. Completely. Irrevocably.

"A magnificent portrait, isn't it?" a low, cultured voice murmured from the shadows beside the velvet drapery.

Khloe froze. Her hand instinctively dropped toward the small, elegant clutch she carried, where a discreet security panic button was hidden inside the satin lining.

She turned slowly.

Standing in the dim light of the gallery, leaning casually against a marble pillar, was a woman dressed in an exquisite black velvet coat. Her face was partially hidden beneath the wide brim of a vintage fedora, but the glint of emerald earrings and the sharp, aristocratic curve of her jawline were unmistakable.

It wasn't Helena. It wasn't Dalia.

It was a face Khloe had only ever seen in faded photographs locked away in the deepest vaults of the Zurich Trust archives—a woman long presumed dead in a private yacht explosion off the coast of Monaco twenty years ago.

"Eleanor Vance," Khloe said, her voice dropping into a cold, steady register as adrenaline surged through her veins. "Gabriel’s aunt. The woman who supposedly vanished with half the council’s treasury."

The woman stepped out from the shadows, lifting the brim of her hat to reveal piercing green eyes that mirrored Gabriel’s own dark intensity, aged by time but burning with an unholy, terrifying brilliance.

"Vanished? No, my dear," Eleanor smiled, a thin, chilling expression that lacked any warmth. "I simply retired to watch the pieces move themselves. You played a magnificent game against Harrison and Helena, Khloe. You proved yourself a true queen."

"If you're here to beg for mercy like the rest of them, you're standing in the wrong room," Khloe replied, her posture unyielding, her eyes locked onto the matriarch. "The Zurich Syndicate is dead."

Eleanor let out a soft, dry laugh that echoed eerily off the marble floors. "Dead? Oh, child. The syndicate wasn't destroyed when Harrison fell. It was merely... cleansed. And a cleansed board requires a new sovereign."

Eleanor took two slow steps forward, holding out a heavy, antique silver key embossed with an unfamiliar, intricate crest—a serpent biting its own tail surrounding a diamond-eyed skull.

"The council didn't send me to destroy you, Khloe," Eleanor whispered, her voice dropping into a conspiratorial purr. "They sent me to offer you the crown of the entire global network. Because the real war—the war against the shadow council that controls both Washington and Zurich from the inside—is about to begin."

Khloe stared at the silver key resting in the old woman’s wrinkled palm.
