Chapter 10 - Shadows in Paradise

The glass-walled villa overlooking the Amalfi coastline was bathed in the amber hues of late afternoon, yet the tranquility that had settled over Khloe Bennett’s life over the past six months was suddenly shattered by a single vibration on Gabriel’s encrypted phone.
Khloe was sitting on the terrace, watching nine-month-old Elena laugh as she splashed her chubby hands in a shallow marble basin of fresh spring water. The golden baby bracelet Gabriel had custom-ordered from Cartier gleamed against Elena’s sun-kissed wrist. Khloe looked every inch the woman who had conquered high society and rebuilt her empire from the ashes of betrayal. Her silk ivory caftan billowed in the Mediterranean breeze, framing the quiet, untouchable strength that had made her a global icon.
Across the terrace, Gabriel lowered the phone from his ear. His jaw, typically relaxed around his daughter, clenched with the razor-sharp tension of a predator sensing an ambush.
"What is it, Gabriel?" Khloe asked, her voice calm but her instincts flaring. She had survived Julian’s duplicity and Dalia’s humiliating spectacle; she could read the slight tilt of Gabriel’s shoulders before he even spoke.
Gabriel walked over, his handmade leather loafers making no sound on the travertine tile. He knelt beside Khloe’s lounge chair, resting his large, warm palm over her knee before brushing a stray curl from Elena’s forehead.
"The federal court in Delaware just unsealed a petition," Gabriel said quietly, his gray eyes darkening like an approaching storm. "Julian didn't show up for his mandatory probation check-in three days ago. His state-appointed attorney filed an emergency notification."
Khloe let out a cold, dismissive chuckle. "Julian is a ruined man with five hundred dollars in a frozen bank account and an ankle monitor. What can he possibly petition for? More time to sweep highway dividers?"
"Julian didn't file it alone," Gabriel said. He pulled up a secure document on his tablet and handed it to her. "Someone bought out the remaining debts on Duval Enterprises. Every mortgage, every lien, every unpaid vendor invoice. They paid two hundred and forty million dollars in cash to clear his corporate balance sheet."
Khloe’s breath hitched. She stared at the screen. The creditor listed on the acquisition documents wasn't an anonymous shell company or an offshore fund. It was Vance Consolidated Holdings—specifically, the European heritage division.
"Victoria," Khloe whispered, the name tasting like ash on her tongue.
Victoria Vance. Gabriel’s estranged half-sister, the cold, calculating matriarch who had spent the last decade running the Vance family’s private banking arm in Zurich. Victoria had never forgiven Gabriel for stripping her branch of voting rights after their father’s death. More importantly, Victoria had openly declared that no woman outside the old-money Continental nobility would ever sit as the lady of the Vance dynasty.
"Victoria bailed Julian out?" Khloe asked, her eyes narrowing as fury surged through her veins. "Why would she align herself with a disgraced, bankrupt philanderer who was publicly exposed on global television?"
"Because Julian still holds one legal technicality," Gabriel explained, his voice dipping into a dangerous register. "When you and Julian separated, the prenuptial agreement included a boilerplate reciprocal IP clause regarding shared architectural portfolios. Julian signed over those blueprints, but Victoria’s legal team is arguing that your multi-billion-dollar sovereign maternal wellness initiative was conceptualized during your marriage to Julian Duval."
Khloe rose to her feet, her presence commanding despite the simplicity of her loungewear. She scooped Elena into her arms, holding her daughter close against her chest. The little girl gave a content sigh and buried her face into Khloe’s neck.
"Julian cheated on me in our marital bed," Khloe said, her voice trembling with cold rage. "He spent my inheritance to buy that fake tiara for Dalia Gomez. He humiliated me in front of the world, and now Victoria thinks she can use his pathetic signature to lay claim to the foundation I built for my daughter?"
Gabriel stood up, towering over the terrace, his aura radiating absolute lethal authority. He wrapped an arm around Khloe and Elena, pulling them both against his broad chest.
"Victoria thinks she’s playing chess with an angry younger brother," Gabriel said, his lips brushing Khloe’s temple. "She forgotten that I didn't just build this empire. I eradicated every man who ever stood in my way. She wants Julian Duval back on the board? Fine. We’ll return to New York tomorrow. And this time, I won't just bankrupt him. I will erase him."
A sharp knock echoed from the interior foyer. Sarah, Khloe’s chief of staff, stepped onto the terrace with a pale face, holding a platinum-edged envelope sealed with deep crimson wax.
"Khloe... Mr. Vance," Sarah said, her voice shaking slightly. "A courier just dropped this at the front gate. It bypassed our outer perimeter security in Rome."
Gabriel took the envelope, slicing it open with a pocket knife. Inside was a single high-resolution photograph.

It showed Khloe walking down Madison Avenue three days ago, pushed closely by an unidentified man in a baseball cap. Pasted onto the back of the photograph was Julian Duval’s handwriting, jagged and unhinged:
*You thought you won, Khloe. But Victoria Vance owns your bloodline now. See you in court.*
