Chapter 16 - Fractured Loyalties

Three weeks after the Met Gala reckoning, the winter snow fell heavily outside the penthouse on Fifth Avenue. The corporate transition had been swift and merciless. Khloe was officially confirmed as Co-Chair of the newly restructured Bennett-Vance Global conglomerate. Julian Duval had accepted a plea deal: eight years without parole at a federal penitentiary in upstate New York. Victoria Vance remained under house arrest in her Southampton estate, awaiting trial with ankle monitors and a frozen passport.
For the first time in two years, peace seemed to have returned to Khloe’s world.
Elena was learning to walk steadily now, her little laughter echoing through the high-ceilinged penthouse as she chased their golden retriever across the plush silk rugs.
Khloe sat at her mahogany desk, reviewing the final blueprints for the Bennett Sovereign Center in Chicago—the very site where her grandfather’s architectural dreams had been stolen decades ago.
Gabriel walked into the study, carrying a tray of chamomile tea and fresh scones. He set it down, wrapping his arms around her from behind, pressing his lips to the crown of her head.
"You've been staring at those blueprints for four hours, my love," Gabriel whispered, his voice rich and tender. "Take a break."
Khloe leaned back into his embrace, closing her eyes, letting his steady strength wash over her. "I still can't believe it's over, Gabriel. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night thinking I’m still on that cold floor in Brentwood, wondering what I did wrong."
"You did nothing wrong," Gabriel murmured, kneeling beside her chair and taking her hands in his. "You were a diamond trapped among thieves. But you're in the light now."
The private intercom chimed softly. It was David, Gabriel’s head of executive security for the past twelve years—a man who had protected Gabriel through three continents and dozens of corporate wars.
"Come in, David," Gabriel called out.
David entered, looking unusually tense. He carried a secured electronic tablet.
"Mr. Vance, Mrs. Vance," David said, his tone clipped. "We just received a priority notification from the warden at the Federal Correctional Institution in Otisville."
Khloe’s eyes snapped open. "Julian?"
"Julian requested an emergency deposition with federal prosecutors this morning," David said, tapping the tablet. "He claims he has physical evidence proving that the conspiracy to ruin you didn't end with Victoria Vance."
Gabriel frowned, his expression turning skeptical. "Julian is desperate. He’s trying to reduce his eight-year sentence. Ignore him."
"Sir," David hesitated, his eyes flickering toward Khloe before returning to Gabriel. "He provided a document. A certified trust withdrawal slip from four months ago—three months after Julian was bankrupt and after Elena was born."
Khloe stood up. "A withdrawal from where?"
"From a private, blind account held under the name *Vesper Holdings*," David answered quietly. "An account that only two people in the world have signature authority over."
Gabriel’s eyes widened slightly. "Vesper Holdings was closed three years ago. I personally liquidated it after my father’s funeral."
"That’s what the records showed, sir," David said, handing the tablet to Gabriel. "But someone reopened it using your private biometric clearance code."
Gabriel stared at the screen. The color drained from his face. The transaction showed a five-million-dollar wire transfer sent directly to an offshore holding firm registered under Julian Duval’s mother’s maiden name.
The authorization signature on the digital slip read: *Gabriel Vance*.
Khloe felt the room spin. The air seemed to vanish from the room.
"Gabriel?" Khloe’s voice was barely a whisper, filled with a sudden, sickening terror. "What is that?"
Gabriel looked up from the tablet, his eyes filled with genuine confusion and shock. "Khloe, I didn't authorize this. I haven't accessed this trust in three years."
"Then whose biometric clearance was used?" Khloe asked, her voice shaking as old, buried traumas came screaming back to the surface. "David, who has Gabriel’s biometric code?"
David lowered his eyes, refusing to meet Gabriel’s gaze.
"Only one person, Mrs. Vance," David said quietly. "The person who programmed the security grid for the Vance estates eight years ago. Gabriel’s former fiancée."
Khloe felt as if an icy blade had been driven through her spine.
"Gabriel’s... former fiancée?" Khloe repeated, looking at Gabriel.
Gabriel stood completely still, his jaw working as if struggling to breathe.

"Helena Montgomery," Gabriel whispered, the name dropping like a bomb in the quiet study. "She died in a car accident in Geneva seven years ago."
David looked up, his face grim. "Sir... the wire transfer wasn't sent from Zurich. It was authorized two hours ago from a penthouse on Central Park South. Helena Montgomery is alive."
