Chapter 18 - A Proposal Under the Stars

Forty-eight hours after the fire at the Bedford estate, Manhattan was transformed into a fortress. Gabriel had mobilized the full military-grade apparatus of his private security network. Every port, private airfield, and hotel under the Vance corporate umbrella was placed under total surveillance. Helena Montgomery was officially declared an international fugitive, wanted for arson, corporate espionage, and domestic terrorism.

Yet amid the chaos, Gabriel did something unexpected.

At midnight, after Elena had been secured under triple-tier security in a fortified safe house beneath the Manhattan residence, Gabriel led Khloe to the private rooftop conservatory of the Fifth Avenue penthouse.

The snowstorm had passed, leaving the New York sky shockingly clear, blanketed in a canopy of crisp, diamond stars. The glass dome was heated, surrounded by blooming white orchids and warm candlelight.

Khloe stood near the glass, looking out over the illuminated spires of the city she had conquered. She was dressed in an ivory cashmere sweater and dark trousers, exhausted but unyielding.

"Why did you bring me up here, Gabriel?" Khloe asked quietly. "Helena is out there. Victoria’s lawyers are filing appeals. We should be reviewing the security grid."

Gabriel walked toward her, his steps unhurried, his presence radiating an unshakable, protective calm.

"Because," Gabriel said softly, reaching out to cup her cheek with his warm hand, "the moment we let them dictate our lives, they win."

Khloe looked into his eyes, feeling the tension slowly melt from her shoulders. "I’m not afraid of her, Gabriel. But I am tired of having to fight for our peace."

"You will never fight alone again, Khloe," Gabriel said.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, worn velvet box.

Khloe caught her breath. "Gabriel..."

Gabriel dropped to one knee before her. For a man who controlled billions, who commanded industries and made prime ministers wait, he looked up at her with complete, humble devotion.

"When you walked into that charity gala six months ago," Gabriel began, his voice thick with emotion, "pregnant, broken by a coward, facing a world that wanted to laugh at you, I saw the strongest woman I had ever known. You didn't need my money to win your dignity back. You rebuilt your empire with your own brilliant mind and unbreakable spirit."

He opened the velvet box.

Inside sat a breathtaking, internally flawless twenty-carat blue diamond, cut into a sovereign cushion, mounted on a platinum band engraved with ancient Celtic knotwork. It wasn't an heirloom from the Vance family’s dark past; it was a stone Gabriel had commissioned privately, forged anew, untouched by blood or betrayal.

"This is not a Vance heirloom," Gabriel said, looking directly into her soul. "This belongs to the Bennett dynasty. To you, Khloe. Will you marry me? Officially, publicly, before the entire world—not just as my partner, but as my wife, my equal, and my sovereign queen?"

Tears spilled over Khloe’s cheeks, warm and liberating. She looked down at the man who had stood beside her through every storm, who had never once doubted her, who loved her daughter as his own flesh and blood.

"Yes," Khloe whispered, her voice choking with joy. "A thousand times, yes."

Gabriel stood up, sliding the magnificent blue diamond onto her finger. It fit perfectly, a radiant beacon of their enduring triumph. He wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her against him, and pressed his lips to hers in a deep, desperate, passionate kiss that made the entire world outside disappear.

For a moment, under the quiet stars of Manhattan, there were no enemies, no bankrupt ex-husbands, no vengeful ghosts from the past.

There was only Khloe and Gabriel.

Until the rooftop elevator chimed.
