Chapter 5 - The Desperate Counterattack

By 7:00 a.m. the following morning, Manhattan was already ablaze with the story.
The front page of the *New York Post* featured a split photograph: on the left, Julian Duval looking pale and furious under the flashing bulbs; on the right, Khloe Bennett glowing in black velvet, Gabriel Lancaster’s hand resting against her waist.
The headline was brutal:
**"THE BILLIONAIRE'S NEW HEIR: Julian Duval's Ex Returns Pregnant With Wall Street Titan Lancaster."**
Beneath it, Page Six ran a secondary piece that was even more humiliating:
*"Sources inside the Allesian Hearts Gala report that Duval Dynamics faces catastrophic debt maturity as Lancaster Capital tightens the financial noose. Meanwhile, Duval’s beauty queen fiancée, Dalia Fontaine, was left visibly stunned as her pageant tour funding was publicly questioned."*
Inside his fifty-fourth-floor office at Duval Dynamics headquarters on Hudson Yards, Julian threw the paper across the room. It struck the floor-to-ceiling glass window and scattered across the plush rug.
"Fix this!" Julian roared, slamming his palms onto the mahogany desk.
Sitting across from him were his chief legal counsel, Marcus Trent, and his senior publicist, Veronica Hayes. Both looked like they hadn't slept in twenty-four hours.
"Julian, be realistic," Veronica said, massaging her temples. "This isn't a PR crisis we can spin with a charity donation. Gabriel Lancaster owns forty percent of the digital media outlets in this city. Every major fashion house is already pulling out of Dalia’s tour. Chanel cancelled their fittings this morning. Dior won't return her calls."
"I don't care about Dalia's dresses!" Julian screamed, his tie askew, his eyes bloodshot. "What about the debt? Marcus, did you check the syndicate agreement?"
Marcus sighed, adjusting his glasses. "I spent the entire night going over the paperwork, Julian. It’s ironclad. When we restructured the Series B debt during the chip shortage last year, we signed off on a secondary debt-assignment clause. Ascend Capital bought the debt entirely legally through a shell entity in Delaware three months ago. They hold the maturity trigger. If they demand liquidity by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, we have to pay eighty-four million dollars in cash."
"We don't have eighty-four million in cash!" Julian yelled, gripping his hair. "We have eighteen million in reserves, and that's earmarked for payroll and the server migration next month!"
"Then they force us into Chapter 11 reorganization," Marcus said bluntly. "The debt converts into sixty percent equity. Gabriel Lancaster becomes the majority shareholder. He can fire you as CEO by lunch on Monday."
Julian’s breath came in ragged, terrified gasps. His entire identity—the genius founder, the Forbes 30 Under 30 alumni, the tech golden boy—was balancing on the edge of a cliff.
"She’s behind this," Julian muttered, his voice trembling with manic intensity. "Khloe is doing this. She wants to destroy me because I divorced her."
"Khloe didn't buy the debt, Julian," Marcus said tiredly. "Ascend Capital did. Gabriel Lancaster operates on a sovereign level. He doesn't play high school games."
"You don't know her!" Julian snarled, his eyes darting frantically around the room. "She knows our architecture. She knows our balance sheet! She worked on the original framework of Duval Dynamics!"
Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the office burst open.
Dalia strode in, wearing oversized designer sunglasses and a white trench coat. Behind her, Julian’s executive assistant looked terrified. "Mr. Duval, I tried to stop her—"
"Leave us," Dalia snapped, slamming the door shut behind her.
She ripped off her sunglasses. Her eyes were puffy, red from crying, but beneath the tears was an icy, desperate venom.
"Dalia, not now," Julian hissed. "We are in the middle of a corporate crisis."
"No, Julian, *I* am in the middle of a crisis!" Dalia threw her Birkin bag onto the sofa. "The Miss Global Elegance committee just called my manager! They’re initiating an internal ethics review! They’re saying my contract violates the non-partisanship clause because of your corporate debt scandals!"
"Ethics review?" Julian laughed bitterly. "You're worried about a plastic crown while my life's work is being executed?"
"That crown is worth millions in endorsement deals!" Dalia screamed. "You promised me a brand! You promised me a lifestyle! You told me your ex-wife was a penniless, broken shut-in who was crying in an Italian village! Now she’s carrying the baby of a man who could buy your entire family tree, and my sponsors are treating me like radioactive waste!"
"Shut up!" Julian lunged around the desk, his finger inches from Dalia’s nose. "Shut your mouth, Dalia!"
Dalia didn't flinch. Instead, a sinister smile crossed her lips. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a sleek silver USB drive, tossing it onto Julian’s desk.
Julian stared at it. "What is that?"
"While you were busy crying into your bourbon last night," Dalia said, her voice dropping into a venomous whisper, "I called a private investigator I know in Los Angeles. The one who handles discretion cases for Beverly Hills clinics."
Veronica, the publicist, sat up straight. "Dalia, what did you do?"
"Khloe’s medical records from the Cedars-Sinai fertility clinic," Dalia purred, leaning forward. "Three miscarriages. Severe hormonal failure. Diagnoses of premature ovarian insufficiency from four different specialists over three years. And the final doctor’s note before the divorce: *'Chances of natural conception: less than zero point one percent.'*"
Julian’s breath caught in his throat.
"Don't you see?" Dalia smiled, her eyes glittering with malice. "Gabriel Lancaster is an old-money billionaire with a pristine public image. If the press finds out that this 'miracle pregnancy' is medically impossible... if we leak that Khloe Duval used an anonymous donor egg, or forged Lancaster's paternity to trap him into marriage..."
"Stop," Marcus said, his voice horrified. "Dalia, that is illegal. Distributing stolen HIPAA-protected medical records is a federal offense. Lancaster's lawyers will bury you under the prison."
"Not if we don't leak it officially," Dalia whispered, looking at Julian with hungry, desperate eyes. "A blind item on Deuxmoi. A leak to an Australian tabloid that US libel laws can't reach. Once the doubt is out there, Gabriel’s board will demand an internal paternity review. Lancaster Capital is a public entity, Julian. They won't tolerate a fraud scandal. It will buy you time. It will humiliate her."
Julian stared at the silver drive.
His conscience—whatever withered fragment was left of it—screamed at him to throw the drive out the window. Khloe had bled for him. She had suffered those losses while holding his hand in sterile hospital rooms. Using her deepest trauma as a media weapon was monstrous.
Then he remembered Gabriel Lancaster’s hand on her waist.
He remembered the pitying look in Khloe’s eyes on the terrace.
*The only poison in my system was you.*
Julian’s hand reached out. His fingers closed around the cold metal of the drive.

"Veronica," Julian said, his voice entirely devoid of humanity. "Contact our third-party media brokers in Sydney. Do it now."
