Chapter 35 - The Threshold of the Zurich Throne

The blinding white light spilled out from the newly opened vault, casting long, distorted silhouettes of Gabriel and Khloe against the ancient stone walls. From the shadows of the doorway, a solitary figure emerged—not Viktor Vance, but an elderly woman wrapped in an impeccably tailored cashmere shawl, leaning heavily on an ebony cane with a silver wolf-head handle.

Eleanor.

The blood from her lip had dried, and her posture was once again entirely upright, devoid of the frailty she had displayed upstairs when Gabriel slammed her against the marble pillar. She looked less like a victim of a corporate brawl and more like an empress inspecting her domain.

"You took your time, Gabriel," Eleanor said smoothly, her voice echoing off the granite walls with crystal clarity. "I was beginning to think you’d let Viktor shoot you both before you reached the inner sanctum."

Gabriel stepped in front of Khloe once more, his hand dropping instinctively toward a concealed holster beneath his jacket. "You played us from the very beginning," he snarled, his eyes fixed on Eleanor with pure venom. "You didn't escape the Zurich Council thirty years ago—you were their architect."

Eleanor offered a thin, knowing smile, her pale eyes shifting past Gabriel to lock onto Khloe. "Survival requires architecture, my dear boy. Your father tried to burn the blueprint because he was weak. But Khloe..." She paused, taking a slow step forward. "...Khloe understands what it means to build something from the ashes of a broken marriage."

Khloe slowly lowered her hand from her stomach, her fingers still firmly clutching the heavy silver key. The realization settled over her like a heavy velvet cloak. Every insult from Julian, every public humiliation by his beauty queen fiancée, every late night reviewing corporate ledgers with Gabriel—it was all part of a filtration system designed to weed out the weak.

"You wanted a chairwoman who wouldn't hesitate to pull the trigger," Khloe said, her voice devoid of emotion, cold and razor-sharp.

"I wanted someone who couldn't be broken by men like Julian or controlled by men like Viktor," Eleanor replied, stopping just a few feet away. She extended a wrinkled, jeweled hand toward the open vault door. "The key you hold doesn't lock you in, Khloe. It locks them out. Will you step inside, or will you let Viktor take your child before he ever takes his first breath?"

Gabriel reached out, his fingers brushing Khloe’s wrist in a desperate, silent plea. "Khloe, if you cross that threshold, there's no turning back. You won't just be a billionaire’s partner—you’ll own the entire board, and every enemy we've made will come for you."

May you like

Khloe looked down at Gabriel’s hand, then past him into the blinding white light of the Zurich vault, where rows of digital terminals hummed with the financial data of half the Fortune 500 companies on earth. She slowly pulled her wrist free from Gabriel’s grip.
