Chapter 32 - Descent into the Sub-Levels

The private executive elevator plummeted downward at a dizzying speed, the digital floor numbers flashing past in a rapid, terrifying blur—Sub-Level 4, Sub-Level 8, Sub-Level 12. The air grew noticeably colder, thick with the scent of ozone and ancient stone.

Khloe stood rigidly in the center of the car, her hand still tightly gripping the heavy silver key, though her other hand rested protectively over her swollen abdomen. She could feel the erratic, heavy breathing of Gabriel beside her. The man who never lost his composure was currently gripping the steel handrail so tightly his knuckles had turned completely translucent.

"They won't use the regular stairwells," Gabriel panted, his eyes fixed on the descending floor numbers. "Viktor has the biometric overrides for every elevator shaft in this building. We’re going straight into the original vault—the one my father built before the Zurich Trust took over."

"Why didn't you tell me about Viktor?" Khloe demanded, her voice sharp, cutting through the hum of the elevator cables. "You told me your family was just distant corporate rivals. You never mentioned an uncle who commands private paramilitary forces inside a skyscraper!"

Gabriel turned to her, his dark eyes flashing with a mixture of agony and desperate regret. "Because I wanted to protect you, Khloe! From the moment you walked into that courtroom carrying my child, I knew Viktor was watching. I thought if I kept you in the light—if I kept you surrounded by cameras, media, and high society—the Zurich Council wouldn't dare touch you. But you just handed them the exact excuse they needed."

"I handed us a weapon," Khloe countered fiercely, holding up the silver key so the emergency light caught its intricate engravings. "Eleanor said this unlocks the foundation. If Viktor wants it this badly, it means whatever is down in that vault can destroy him just as easily as it can destroy us."

Before Gabriel could answer, the elevator gave a violent shudder and ground to a sudden, jarring halt. The digital display flickered and died, plunging the car into absolute, suffocating darkness, illuminated only by the faint red glow of the emergency backup strip along the floor.

*Ding.*

The heavy outer doors slowly pried open from the outside, not by the elevator's automated system, but by hydraulic pry bars cutting through the steel.

Gabriel instantly pulled Khloe behind him, his body tensing like a coiled spring as the smoke and blue sparks of a thermal torch showered down from the gap above the doors.
