Chapter 24 - The Patriarch’s Shadow

The penthouse air felt suddenly thin, as if all the oxygen had been vacuumed out by the silent terror of Dr. Harrison Vance’s face flickering on the laptop screen.

Gabriel stood frozen, his massive frame rigid as stone. The color had drained from his face once more, but this time, it wasn't fear—it was an incandescent, murderous rage that threatened to consume him entirely.

"Harrison," Gabriel whispered, the name grating like broken glass against his teeth. "I banished him to Geneva six years ago. I bought out every last share he held in the family trust. He was supposed to be dead to the world."

"Dead men don't break into private maternity wards to tamper with genetic records," Khloe said, her voice dropping into a chilling, analytical calm that masked the storm raging inside her. She forced her fingers to steady as she clicked on the digital file Dr. Harrison had inserted into the hospital system.

A PDF document opened on the screen. It was an amended genetic sequencing report for baby Elena.

Gabriel leaned over her shoulder, his eyes scanning the lines of genomic data. As his gaze hit the bottom of the page, his breath hitched.

"What is this?" Gabriel demanded, his hand gripping the edge of the mahogany desk so hard the wood splintered under his grip.

"Look at the haplogroup matching," Khloe pointed to the highlighted section. "It’s not yours, Gabriel. And it’s not mine."

Gabriel’s eyes widened in horror. "That’s... that’s impossible. Harrison altered the baseline data to match the Zurich Syndicate’s proprietary bloodline registry. He’s claiming..." Gabriel stopped, unable to voice the grotesque lie.

"He’s claiming Elena is not a Vance by birth, but a designated heir to the Zurich Trust through a pre-arranged dynastic blood pact signed by the elder council decades ago," Khloe finished for him, her eyes burning with an icy, terrifying clarity. "In their eyes, Elena doesn't belong to us. She belongs to the syndicate."

Marcus Vance burst into the study without knocking, his face pale, breathing heavily as he held a secure tablet in his hand. "Gabriel, Khloe—you need to see this now. The New York Supreme Court just slapped an emergency injunction on the Vance Global asset transfer. Filed by a Swiss probate court on behalf of... Dr. Harrison Vance."

"On what legal grounds?" Gabriel roared, spinning around to face his cousin.

"On the grounds of familial wardship," Marcus said grimly. "Harrison is petitioning for emergency custody of Elena, citing a clause in the original Vance Family Charter from 1912 that grants the head of the council sovereign control over any heir born outside approved syndicate unions."

Khloe stood up slowly. The chair scraped sharply against the hardwood floor. She didn't look panicked; she looked like an executioner stepping onto the scaffold.

"They want a war over my daughter," Khloe said, her voice deadpan and absolute. "They picked the wrong mother."

"We fly to Zurich tonight," Gabriel said, his voice ringing with absolute, unyielding finality. "We take their council apart piece by piece, legal document by legal document, bullet by bullet if necessary. Nobody touches my family."

"No, Gabriel," Khloe corrected, walking over to the safe behind her desk and entering a complex biometric code. The heavy steel door swung open, revealing not documents or cash, but a polished black attaché case containing encrypted satellite comms and international diplomatic immunity credentials issued directly through her father’s old international shipping network. "We don't go to them. We invite them to New York. And we destroy them on our terms."
