Chapter 47 - The Brentwood Estate Under Siege

Back in New York, the sun was beginning to dip below the skyline, casting long, bruised shadows across the manicured lawns of the Brentwood Estate. Inside the grand library, Khloe sat behind an antique mahogany desk, her eyes fixed on the encrypted tablet resting on the polished wood.
The message from Zurich had arrived ten minutes ago. *The Alpine Council has fallen... but the hidden vault in Geneva has been unlocked from the inside.*
Marcus stood near the mahogany double doors, his expression as hard as granite. He had just received a situation report from their private security perimeter along the Hudson shoreline.
"All external sensors are picking up anomalies, Ms. Vance," Marcus reported, his voice dropping to a tense whisper. "Our encrypted satellite feeds from Geneva confirm the thermal breach of Sub-Level 4. But the biometric override... it wasn't hacked by an outsider."
Khloe looked up slowly, her heart skipping a beat against her better judgment. "Who?"
"My brother," Marcus said, the words tasting like ash in his mouth. "Ethan Vance. The man everyone thought died in the Alps five years ago. He didn't die, Khloe. He went underground to build a shadow syndicate of his own."
The sheer audacity of the revelation hit Khloe like a physical blow. For months, she had fought tooth and nail to dismantle Julian, Dalia, and the Alpine High Council, believing she had reached the absolute apex of the financial food chain. But now, a ghost from the Vance family tree had returned—not to beg for mercy, but to claim the very empire she had just conquered.
Before Khloe could reply, the mansion's master security alarm didn't ring—it flatlined.
The warm, ambient lighting of the library flickered once, twice, and then plunged into absolute darkness, replaced instantly by the harsh, pulsing red glow of the emergency backup generators.
"We're compromised," Marcus muttered, drawing a concealed sidearm from his shoulder holster with practiced, lightning-fast precision. He moved instinctively to shield Khloe, positioning himself between her and the heavy library doors.
*Bang.*
The massive oak doors of the library didn't just open—they were blown inward by a precision breaching charge, the heavy wood splintering into a thousand pieces as a cloud of white smoke billowed into the room.
Through the haze stepped a tall, imposing figure in a tailored dark overcoat, his silver-streaked hair neat, his hands casually tucked into his pockets. A faint, knowing smile played across his lips as he stepped over the shattered wreckage of the door.
"Good afternoon, my dear niece," Ethan Vance said smoothly, his deep voice carrying easily across the ruined room. "I must say, you've done a magnificent job cleaning up the mess my former associates left behind. But you forgot one golden rule of high finance..."
He paused, stepping further into the red emergency light, his steel-gray eyes locking onto Khloe’s defiant glare.
"...You can't own the crown if someone else holds the mortgage."
Khloe didn't flinch. Despite the smoke, despite the sudden darkness, despite the overwhelming threat standing ten feet away, she slowly stood up from her desk. Her hands rested protectively over her stomach, but her chin was tilted up in an unmistakable gesture of sovereign defiance.
"You think you can waltz in here and take what I built with blood and strategy?" Khloe’s voice rang out, cold, steady, and utterly fearless. "You're a ghost, Ethan. And ghosts don't belong in the daylight."
Ethan chuckled softly, taking another step forward. "We'll see who belongs in the daylight, Khloe... once the baby is born, and the trust automatically transfers to the primary bloodline."
Marcus raised his pistol, aiming directly at Ethan’s chest. "Take one more step, and I'll send you back to the grave you crawled out of."
May you like
Ethan didn't even look at the gun. He simply raised two fingers, and a dozen laser sights instantly appeared on Marcus's chest, aimed from the dark shadows of the hallway outside.
