Chapter 3 - The Crown and the Checkbook

The VIP lounge of the Armand Grand Hall was separated from the main ballroom by velvet drapery and two security guards who vetted attendees by wealth and pedigree. For the last two years, Julian had considered this room his natural habitat. It was where the real deals were made, where men with nine-figure valuations clinked scotch glasses and decided the future of tech.

Tonight, Julian couldn't breathe.

He had dragged Dalia away from the red carpet after the humiliation Gabriel had dealt him, retreating into the VIP enclosure like a wounded animal seeking shelter. But there was no shelter here. Every eye was tracking him. The quiet murmurs of his peers followed him like a swarm of hornets.

"Did you hear?"

"Lancaster called her his fiancée."

"She’s pregnant. Whose child is it?"

"If Gabriel’s claiming it, does it matter? Duval looks like he’s about to vomit."

Julian downed a glass of bourbon in a single swallow, his hand shaking so hard the glass clattered against the marble high-top table.

"Julian, stop it!" Dalia hissed, grabbing his sleeve, her voice trembling with hysteria. "What is going on? Who is that man? Why does he have control over my pageant funding? You told me you were friends with the sponsors!"

"Shut up, Dalia," Julian snapped through gritted teeth, his eyes glued to the entrance of the VIP lounge.

"Don't you dare talk to me like that!" Dalia fired back, her beauty queen composure entirely ruined. "I am the face of this gala! I am your fiancée! And you just let your barren ex-wife walk in here and humiliate me in front of the entire press corps!"

Julian spun on her, his face dark with fury. "Barren? Do you have eyes, Dalia? Did she look barren to you tonight?"

The word hung between them like a blade. Julian's chest rose and fell rapidly. For three years of their marriage, the narrative had been Khloe’s failure. It had been her fragile body, her hostile womb, her inability to carry his legacy. Julian had repeated that lie to his board, to his mother, to his friends, and to himself until it became gospel. It had made the divorce easy. It had absolved him of guilt when he tossed her out of their glass penthouse and replaced her with a twenty-four-year-old girl whose only talent was looking pretty on Instagram.

And now, Khloe was carrying a child. Not his.

Gabriel Lancaster’s.

The curtains parted, and the room went dead silent again.

Khloe walked in, her hand resting naturally on her belly. Gabriel was at her side, one hand casually resting in the pocket of his tuxedo, exuding the effortless, unshakable power of a man who owned the building they were standing in.

They didn't look for Julian. That was the most devastating part of it. Khloe didn't scan the room seeking her revenge; she simply walked in like she belonged there, because she did.

Within seconds, the most powerful people in the room gravitated toward them. Arthur Vance, the chairman of Morgan Stanley, practically tripped over his own feet to shake Gabriel's hand.

"Gabriel, my boy! Wonderful to see you," Vance boomed, before turning to Khloe with genuine reverence. "And Khloe... or should I say, the mysterious 'M. Bennett' whose macroeconomic white papers have been terrifying my board for the last eighteen months?"

Julian’s ears rang. *White papers? M. Bennett?*

Khloe smiled warmly at Vance, extending her hand. "Arthur, please. I told you that deregulation of consumer credit portfolios was going to trigger liquidity contractions. You shouldn't have been surprised."

"Surprised? You saved our European division forty million dollars with that risk assessment!" Vance laughed, tapping Gabriel on the shoulder. "Where did you find this woman, Lancaster? If she ever wants to run a hedge fund, my checkbook is open."

"She already runs her own investment syndicate, Arthur," Gabriel said, looking down at Khloe with a pride so pure and unadulterated it felt like a dagger twisting in Julian’s guts. "And she doesn't take outside money unless she respects the leadership. So you'd better behave."

Julian couldn't take it anymore. The alcohol, the shame, and the burning humiliation roared in his veins. He pushed past Dalia, ignoring her desperate grab at his arm, and marched directly into the center of the circle.

"Khloe," Julian barked, abandoning every shred of decorum.

The conversation halted. Vance frowned, stepping back slightly, appalled by the lack of manners. Gabriel didn't flinch. He merely tilted his head, watching Julian with cold curiosity.

Khloe turned slowly, her eyes calm, dark pools of absolute indifference. "Julian. Are you enjoying the gala?"

"We need to speak," Julian said, his voice dropping into a harsh, urgent rasp. "Alone. Right now. In the gallery."

"I have nothing to say to you, Julian," Khloe replied, taking a delicate sip from a flute of sparkling water with lime. "Anything you wish to discuss regarding our past was finalized by our attorneys two years ago. I believe the non-disclosure agreement *you* drafted was quite comprehensive."

"This isn't about the past!" Julian snapped, his eyes darting frantically to her stomach before rising to Gabriel. "This is about... this spectacle! You disappeared to Europe for two years. No one heard from you. And now you show up here, five months pregnant, wrapped in Lancaster's arm, parading yourself around my industry?"

"Your industry?" Khloe laughed. It was a light, musical sound, but it cut deeper than a razor. "Julian, darling. I wrote the strategic brief that secured your first twelve million dollars when we were eating cold takeout off cardboard boxes in Chicago. I built the operating model you’re still trying to run into the ground. You didn't build this industry. You just took the credit."

"Khloe—"

"And as for parading myself," she stepped forward, her voice dropping to a cool, lethal murmur that only the surrounding circle could hear, "I didn't seek you out, Julian. You happen to be standing in a room funded by my fiancé. You are breathing air paid for by the people who actually create value. If you find my presence uncomfortable, the exit is behind you."

"You're using him," Julian snarled, his control snapping completely. He pointed a trembling finger at Gabriel. "She’s using you, Lancaster! She couldn't carry a pregnancy to term if her life depended on it! Ask her about our three miscarriages! Ask her about the doctors in Zurich and Los Angeles! She’s running a con on you!"

The room dropped ten degrees.

A collective gasp sucked the air out of the VIP lounge. Arthur Vance’s face turned purple with disgust. Two tech CEOs shook their heads in utter disbelief at the sheer savagery of Julian’s outburst.

Gabriel Lancaster didn't shout. He didn't lunge.

He calmly set his champagne glass down on a passing waiter’s tray. Then he stepped into Julian’s personal space. Gabriel was taller, broader, and his eyes held the kind of ancient, predatory violence that no amount of money could buy.

"Duval," Gabriel said, his voice a low vibration that made the floorboards hum. "You are going to apologize to my fiancée. And then you are going to leave."

Julian tried to hold his ground, but his knees shook. "You don't know her, Lancaster—"

"I know she spent seven years carrying a mediocre boy on her shoulders and letting him believe he was an emperor," Gabriel said, each word landing like a lead weight. "And I know that your flagship company, Duval Dynamics, owes eighty-four million dollars in convertible notes maturing at midnight on Friday. Notes held by a subsidiary of Ascend Capital."

Julian froze. His eyes widened into saucers. "What?"

May you like

"I bought your debt six months ago, Julian," Gabriel whispered, a terrible, beautiful smile curving his lips. "Khloe didn't ask me to. She didn't even know. I did it because I don't like men who mistreat what is sacred. If you ever speak of my child, or my wife, again... I will call those notes due on Monday morning. And by Tuesday, you won't be able to afford the bus fare out of Manhattan."
