Chapter 39 - The Final Echo

The deafening report of the gunshot faded into a ringing silence, replaced only by the steady, mechanical hum of the central console and the hiss of escaping steam from the breached doorway.

Gabriel staggered back half a step, his hand flying to his shoulder as a dark crimson stain began to spread rapidly across the fabric of his shirt. Viktor held the smoking pistol steady, his smile widening as he prepared to pull the trigger a second time.

Before Viktor could adjust his aim, a sharp, metallic click echoed from the central console beside Khloe.

*PURGE PROTOCOL ACTIVATED,* the synthetic AI voice announced calmly across the vault. *BIOMETRIC LOCKDOWN ENGAGED. ALL ASSETS FROZEN.*

Instantly, every digital screen in the amphitheater went pitch black, followed by the heavy, ominous sound of secondary blast doors slamming shut throughout the entire subterranean complex, sealing off the exits one by one. The mercenaries’ tactical gear sparked and died simultaneously as an electromagnetic pulse swept through the room, disabling every weapon and radio within range.

Viktor cursed, pulling the trigger again, but the weapon clicked harmlessly on an inactive firing pin. He spun around toward the exit, only to watch in horror as the primary steel doorway dropped into place with a definitive, inescapable slam, cutting off their escape route completely.

Khloe stepped away from the obsidian reader, her heels clicking sharply against the stone floor. She walked past the fallen guards, past Eleanor who stood watching with awed reverence, and stopped directly in front of Viktor.

Her expression was a mask of cold, unyielding power—the exact opposite of the vulnerable woman Julian had humiliated months ago, and far more terrifying than any billionaire cartel leader in Zurich.

"You wanted the board, Viktor," Khloe said softly, her voice carrying an absolute authority that made even the ruthless older man take an involuntary step back. "You wanted a pawn you could control. But you forgot one fundamental rule of the game."

She reached out, gently lifting the heavy silver key from the obsidian reader and dropping it into the palm of her hand.

"The person who holds the key doesn't answer to the council," Khloe whispered, her eyes flashing with a cold, unforgiving light. "The council answers to her."

Before Viktor could speak, the floor beneath their feet began to tremble with a low, deep vibration. The emergency red lights flickered once, twice, and then went completely dark, plunging the entire vault into absolute, suffocating shadow, save for the faint, pulsing blue glow of the twenty-carat diamond ring still resting on Eleanor's finger across the room...
