Chapter 12 - Blood and Boardrooms

The gilded corridors of the Plaza Hotel were choked with reporters, photographers, and high-finance executives by three-thirty that afternoon. The gossip had reached a fever pitch. Julian Duval, the humiliated ex-husband who had lost everything to his wife’s billionaire savior, was making his grand re-emergence under the wing of the Vance dynasty’s most fearsome woman.

Inside the Oak Room, Victoria Vance stood near the podium. At fifty-five, she was immaculate, her gray-streaked hair swept back into a severe chignon, wearing an austere navy Chanel suit that screamed generational privilege. Beside her sat Julian Duval. He looked groomed, but the nervous twitch under his left eye betrayed the terrified charlatan hiding beneath the veneer.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the press," Victoria began, her voice ringing with aristocratic disdain through the microphone. "For too long, the Vance name has been dragged through tabloid sensationalism by certain... opportunists who used my half-brother’s infatuation to usurp intellectual property belonging to Duval Enterprises. Today, my consortium is restoring balance."

She gestured toward Julian. Julian stood up, adjusting his silk tie, clearing his throat with a practiced, solemn expression.

"When Khloe and I were married," Julian began, reading carefully from a teleprompter, "we shared everything. The concept for the Sovereign Centers was born during our summer in Martha’s Vineyard. I made mistakes in my personal life—mistakes I deeply regret—but that does not give Khloe Bennett the right to use Gabriel Vance’s vast legal machinery to erase my life's work."

The flashbulbs erupted. Julian seemed to feed on the attention, standing taller, mistaking Victoria’s temporary patronage for genuine power.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the back of the Oak Room swung open with a resounding crash.

The room fell dead silent.

Khloe Bennett walked in.

She wore a bespoke scarlet wool coat tailored sharply at the shoulders, paired with five-inch Louboutin heels that clicked against the marble with the rhythm of an executioner’s drum. She wore no jewelry except for the massive emerald-cut engagement ring Gabriel had slipped onto her finger in Paris, alongside her signature calm authority.

Flanking her were four armed federal marshals and Marcus Sterling, followed closely by Gabriel Vance himself. Gabriel didn't look at the press. He didn't look at Julian. His gaze locked onto his half-sister Victoria, cold and lethal.

"Khloe Bennett," Victoria said smoothly into the microphone, not missing a beat. "I didn't realize uninvited guests were permitted past security."

"Security works for the building, Victoria," Gabriel’s baritone echoed across the high ceiling, cutting through the murmuring crowd like a scythe. "And I bought the Plaza Hotel twenty minutes ago."

Gasps rippled through the press corps. Victoria’s mask slipped, her jaw tightening.

Khloe walked straight down the center aisle, her eyes fixed entirely on Julian. Julian’s skin lost all color, his hands visibly shaking against the polished wooden podium.

"You're looking well, Julian," Khloe said, her voice crystal clear, reaching every recording device in the room. "The suit suits you. It’s certainly an upgrade from the orange vest you wore while collecting litter on the Long Island Expressway two weeks ago."

Several reporters snickered. Julian swallowed hard. "Khloe, this is a legal matter. You can't intimidate me anymore. I have independent representation."

"You don't have representation, Julian," Khloe replied, stopping three feet from the stage. "You have an accomplice."

Marcus Sterling stepped forward, opening a leather dossier and presenting a signed document to the lead federal marshal.

"Mr. Duval," Marcus announced, loud enough for every camera to capture. "Pursuant to Section 152 of Title 18 of the United States Code, you are hereby served with an immediate arrest warrant for fraudulent concealment of assets, false oaths in bankruptcy, and international wire fraud."

Julian stumbled backward, knocking over his glass of water. It shattered violently against the parquet floor. "What? Victoria, do something! I have diplomatic immunity! You told me the Zurich pass protected me!"

Victoria stepped away from him, her cold blue eyes assessing the room. She realized instantly that Gabriel had outmaneuvered her.

"The diplomatic pass issued by your cultural foundation was revoked by the Department of State forty-five minutes ago, Victoria," Gabriel said, stepping up beside Khloe. "Did you really think I wouldn't audit the foundation’s Swiss compliance records before breakfast? You used sovereign funds to harbor a fugitive from federal probation."

The marshals climbed the stage, their handcuffs catching the harsh glare of the chandeliers.

"Hands behind your back, Mr. Duval," the lead officer commanded.

"No! Wait!" Julian shrieked, his composure disintegrating as the cold steel snapped around his wrists. "Khloe, please! I was broke! She came to me! Victoria came to me in Rome! She promised me ten million dollars if I signed the equity claim! She told me you would settle out of court to protect your reputation!"

The reporters went into a feeding frenzy, cameras flashing wildly as Julian was pinned against the podium.

Victoria remained frozen, her aristocratic pride cracking beneath the weight of fifty recording cameras broadcasting her public humiliation across every major network.

Khloe leaned in close to Julian as the marshals hauled him down the steps.

"I didn't settle when you cheated on me, Julian," Khloe whispered in his ear, her voice dripping with venom. "And I certainly won't settle now that you've traded community service for ten years in federal prison."
