Chapter 22 - The Fall of the House of Duval

The world seemed to slow down into fractions of a second.

As Julian lunged forward, the silver revolver raised toward Khloe’s chest, Gabriel moved with the blinding, feral speed of a predator defending its mate. He didn't fire his weapon—he didn't need to. In two massive strides, Gabriel intercepted Julian mid-air, slamming the smaller man against the cold, iron hull of the abandoned freighter with a sickening crash of bone and metal.

Julian gasped, the breath expelled from his lungs in a violent wheeze as the silver revolver clattered across the concrete and skittered into the dark waters of the East River.

"You... you ruined me," Julian choked out, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth as Gabriel pinned him against the rusted steel with one heavy forearm pressed across his throat. "She... she promised me everything..."

"You ruined yourself the day you thought you could trade my wife like a poker chip," Gabriel’s voice was a low, terrifying growl that vibrated through the steel deck. "Your trial was a farce, Julian. But this time, there won't be a plea deal. You're going to a hole so deep the sun won't reach you until you're dust."

Federal marshals swarmed the pier from the descending helicopters, heavy boots pounding against the concrete. Within seconds, half a dozen tactical agents had Julian pinned to the ground, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists and dragging him away as he shrieked curses into the freezing wind.

Ten feet away, Helena Montgomery stood frozen. Her immaculate Chanel coat was ruffled by the downdraft of the rotors, her carefully constructed empire of lies crumbling into ash around her feet. The secure briefcase slipped from her fingers, hitting the concrete with a dull thud.

Two federal agents flanked her immediately, their hands resting on their holsters.

"Helena Montgomery, you are under arrest for corporate espionage, wire fraud, conspiracy, and extortion," the lead marshal commanded, his voice clipped and professional.

Helena didn't struggle. She didn't scream. Instead, she turned her head slowly, her piercing blue eyes fixing upon Khloe with a look of pure, unadulterated poison.

"You think you’ve won, little girl," Helena whispered as the cuffs were locked around her wrists. "Gabriel’s past isn't a ghost you can lay to rest. That child—the one I’m carrying, the one tied to our legally binding contract—will always be a reminder that he belonged to me first. You’ll never be free of us."

Khloe didn't flinch. She stepped forward, her gaze meeting Helena’s with absolute, unshakeable sovereignty.

"A contract signed under fraud is worth less than the paper it’s printed on, Helena," Khloe replied calmly. "And Gabriel belongs to no one except the woman who stood beside him in the fire. Enjoy your cell."

As Helena was marched toward the waiting transport helicopter, her head held high in a pathetic display of lingering arrogance, the floodlights of the Navy Yard cut through the dissipating fog, signaling the dawn of a brand-new day.

Gabriel walked back over to Khloe, his face bruised from the scuffle, his coat stained with soot and salt water. He looked down at her, his dark eyes swirling with a mixture of raw exhaustion, fierce devotion, and profound relief.

"Are you hurt?" Gabriel asked, his hands gently framing her face, his thumbs brushing against her cheekbones.

"I'm untouched," Khloe whispered, leaning into his touch for a fraction of a second before stepping back, maintaining her poised, regal posture. "Are you?"

Gabriel let out a ragged breath that turned into a plume of white vapor in the freezing air. "I've never been more alive. Or more terrified of losing you."

"You almost did," Khloe reminded him softly, lifting her left hand so the twenty-carat blue diamond caught the morning sun. "Not because of Julian, and not because of Helena. But because of secrets. If there is anything else—any other ghost, any other contract, any other lie from your past—you tell me now, Gabriel. Because the next time a secret surfaces, I won't just walk away. I will burn your empire to the ground myself."

Gabriel stared at her, and for the first time since they had met, there was no shadow in his eyes. Only absolute, unwavering truth.

"There are no more secrets, Khloe. Vance Global, my soul, my future—it all belongs to you and Elena. Forever."
