Chapter 31 - The Ghost of the High Council

The heavy double doors of the Vance Global gala hall remained wide open, framing the imposing figure of Viktor Vance against the dim, rain-slicked corridors outside. The synchronized boots of the Zurich security detail stopped dead in unison, creating an acoustic shockwave that rattled the champagne flutes still resting on the nearby tables.
Gabriel instinctively stepped in front of Khloe, his broad shoulders forming a protective barrier, though his posture radiated a defensive tension she had never seen in him before. The ruthless billionaire who had crushed Julian Duval’s public humiliation campaign with a single phone call now looked like a hunted animal cornered in its own den.
"Viktor," Gabriel’s voice dropped into a low, gravelly snarl. "You were supposed to stay in the Alps. The Zurich Accord banished you thirty years ago."
Viktor let out a dry, mirthless chuckle that sounded like dry leaves scraping across concrete. He stepped further into the light, his tailored charcoal suit flawless despite the damp night air, his silver hair combed straight back to reveal eyes that were the exact, chilling shade of Gabriel’s.
"Banishment is a word for children, Gabriel," Viktor replied smoothly, his gaze sliding past his nephew’s shoulder to fix entirely on Khloe. He took in her calm demeanor, the sharp line of her designer maternity gown, and most importantly, the heavy silver key resting securely in her right hand. "It seems our newest family member has a very bad habit of picking up things she doesn't understand."
Khloe did not flinch. She stepped out from behind Gabriel’s protective stance, lifting her chin with the same fierce pride that had once paralyzed the entire ballroom when she walked in pregnant and triumphant weeks ago. "I understand perfectly well what I’m holding, Viktor," she said, her voice ringing clear and steady through the silent hall. "It's the key to every lie this family has built its empire on."
A flicker of genuine surprise crossed Viktor’s cold features before quickly vanishing behind a mask of amused condescension. "Brave words for a woman carrying a child who won't even live to see their first birthday if that key stays in your hand," Viktor remarked casually, gesturing slightly to the armed guards flanking him. Instantly, every guard raised their weapons, the tactical lasers painting red dots across the marble floor perilously close to Khloe’s feet.
Gabriel reacted with explosive speed. Before the guards could tighten their grip, he lunged toward a concealed panel behind the nearest marble pillar, slamming his fist against an emergency override button. Red warning lights flooded the ceiling as a heavy steel blast door began to descend from above, separating the gala hall from the outer corridor.
"Move!" Gabriel roared, grabbing Khloe’s wrist and pulling her toward the private executive elevator hidden behind the main stage.

Eleanor, still slumped against her pillar, let out a sharp, hysterical laugh as the steel doors crashed down inches in front of Viktor’s outstretched hand, cutting off the elder Vance’s cold stare just as the elevator doors slid shut with a definitive, mechanical chime.
