Chapter 14 - The Hidden Siphon

The silence in the library after Dalia Gomez was escorted out was deafening. The only sound was the crackle of burning birch wood and the wind howling against the glass high above Manhattan.
Khloe stood beside the hearth, staring down at the faded bank records Dalia had surrendered. The transaction numbers were clear. Five years ago—six months before Julian Duval had first "accidentally" bumped into Khloe at a museum charity auction and pursued her with flowers and poetic promises—a transfer of two million dollars had originated from the *Aegis Heritage Trust*.
The trustee of record? Harold Vance. Gabriel’s late father.
"My entire marriage," Khloe whispered, her knuckles turning white as she gripped the mantelpiece. "My entire life with Julian... the miscarriages, the emotional abuse, the constant reminders that I wasn't enough, that my designs were too ambitious, that I needed to stay small... it was all planned?"
Gabriel didn't answer immediately. He was standing by the window, his reflection staring back at him against the black night. When he finally turned, the cold fury radiating from his body was terrifying. In all the time Khloe had known him, through hostile takeovers and public scandals, she had never seen Gabriel Vance look like this.
"My father," Gabriel said, each syllable carved from ice, "was an absolute monster."
"Gabriel, look at me," Khloe demanded, her voice cracking with the pain of an old wound being brutally ripped open. "Did you know?"
"No!" Gabriel crossed the room in three strides, taking her hands in his, his grip desperate, urgent. "Khloe, look into my eyes. On Elena’s life, on my soul, I did not know."
Khloe looked into his clear gray eyes. There was no deception there—only raw, unadulterated torment.
"My father hated that I wouldn't conform to his dynasty," Gabriel explained, his voice rough. "When he was dying of cancer, he rewrote the trust four times. He was obsessed with bloodlines and control. He knew that your grandfather, Arthur Bennett, had designed the iconic Vance Tower in Chicago in 1968. He knew there was an old legal covenant stating that if the Bennett and Vance architectural portfolios ever merged through marriage, Arthur Bennett’s descendants would gain sovereign executive board seats."
Khloe stepped back, her mind racing through her family history. Her grandfather had been a visionary architect who had died penniless after being squeezed out of his Chicago contracts by Vance Consolidated.
"Your father stole my grandfather’s work," Khloe realized, her eyes widening in horror. "And when my grandfather died, your father lived in terror that I would uncover the fraud. So he paid a broke, charming social climber named Julian Duval to find me, marry me, demoralize me, and keep me broken."
"And when Julian failed to keep you down," Gabriel continued, his voice tight, "when you divorced him and found your strength again, Victoria took over the mandate. She thought if she teamed up with Julian, she could enforce the old trust covenant and strip me of Vance Consolidated."
"They didn't just ruin my first marriage, Gabriel," Khloe said, her voice dropping into a deadly whisper, her tears drying into diamond-hard resolve. "They tried to orchestrate my entire existence. They treated my pain, my fertility struggles, my tears on the Brentwood floor as line items on a balance sheet."
Gabriel pulled her into his arms, holding her so tightly she could feel the thunderous beating of his heart against her cheek.
"They failed, Khloe," Gabriel murmured against her hair. "They tried to break you, and instead, you walked into that ballroom pregnant with my child and brought their entire world to its knees."
Khloe pulled back, wiping her face, her eyes blazing with an ancient, unyielding fire.
"We aren't waiting for Victoria’s trial," Khloe said, her tone sending a chill through the air. "Call the board of Vance Consolidated. Call every institutional shareholder in London, Zurich, and Tokyo. Call the press."

"What are you going to do?" Gabriel asked.
"Your father tried to bury the Bennett name sixty years ago," Khloe said, her chin lifting with supreme dignity. "Tomorrow morning, I’m activating my grandfather’s covenant. I’m seizing control of Vance Consolidated. And Victoria Vance will watch me do it from the front row."
