Chapter 46 - Shadows in the Geneva Vault

The secure underground server room beneath the Geneva banking district was normally a sanctuary of absolute silence, broken only by the low, steady hum of industrial cooling units and the blinking green status lights of quantum-encrypted mainframes. But today, the air in Sub-Level 4 was thick with the acrid scent of ozone and burning copper.

A high-frequency thermal lance had just sliced through the six-inch-thick titanium door of the Alpine High Council’s primary vault.

Sparks rained down in a brilliant cascade of orange and white, illuminating the tactical combat gear of three masked operatives moving with terrifying, military-grade precision. At the center of the breach stood a tall, broad-shouldered figure clad in a matte-black operational harness, his face concealed behind a tactical balaclava. He didn't use the thermal lance himself; instead, he watched with cold, calculating detachment as his subordinate burned through the final locking mechanism of the inner vault.

"Thermal breach complete, Commander," the tech specialist reported through a secure comms channel, his fingers flying across a portable override console. "The master data core is exposed. Downloading the encrypted cold-storage drives now."

The Commander stepped forward, his heavy combat boots crunching against the metallic dust of the destroyed door. He raised a gloved hand and pressed it directly against the biometric interface of the central mainframe—an interface that supposedly only recognized the thumbprint of the Alpine Council’s Grand Treasurer.

A soft, melodic chime echoed through the vault, followed by a flashing blue light on the console.

*Access Granted. Welcome, Sovereign Administrator.*

The Commander slowly peeled off his tactical balaclava, revealing the sharp, aristocratic features of a man in his early forties, with piercing steel-gray eyes and a faint, jagged scar running down the side of his jaw. It was Julian’s estranged, long-absent uncle—Marcus Vance’s enigmatic brother, Ethan Vance—a man whom global intelligence agencies had presumed dead in a private plane crash over the Alps five years ago.

"Well, well," Ethan murmured, his voice a deep, gravelly baritone that echoed off the cold stone walls. "My dear niece-in-law Khloe thinks she has checkmated the board by capturing the puppet masters in New York. She has no idea she just inherited a burning house."

The tech specialist glanced up nervously from his screen. "Commander, the download is at eighty percent. But... there's an anomaly in the secondary partition. It's a dormant algorithmic trigger. It looks like a dead-man's switch programmed by the Council's original founders."

Ethan walked closer to the glowing monitor, his eyes narrowing as he read the lines of scrolling crimson code. "Explain."

"It's not just a financial database," the specialist said, his voice tightening with urgency. "It's a sovereign debt ledger. Every billion dollars the Council injected into global infrastructure over the past fifty years wasn't an investment—it was a leveraged lien on sovereign real estate. Including... including the Brentwood Estate in New York."

Ethan’s expression didn't show panic; instead, a slow, predatory smile spread across his lips. He reached out and tapped a key on the console, halting the download at ninety-nine percent.

"Don't finish the download," Ethan ordered quietly.

"Sir? If we don't take the full data, Khloe Vance will—"

"Khloe Vance wants to play empress?" Ethan interrupted, his eyes gleaming with dark amusement. "Let her wear the crown. But a crown made of borrowed iron is heavier than she realizes. We aren't going to steal her money, soldier. We are going to change the rules of the game so that every dollar she holds legally belongs to us the moment her child is born."

He turned away from the vault, walking toward the private elevator that led up to the surface streets of Geneva.

May you like

"Pack up the gear," Ethan commanded over his shoulder. "Send an encrypted packet to Khloe Vance in New York. Tell her the Geneva vault has been opened... and invite her to come collect her inheritance in person."
