Chapter 48 - The Sealed Vault

The heavy steel blast doors of the relay room sealed shut with a final, hydraulic thud, plunging the small subterranean chamber into an eerie, amber-lit twilight. Across the room, the ancient cathode-ray terminal flickered violently, its green lines of text dissolving into a rolling cascade of randomized error codes as an automated override script executed itself from an external source.

"Arthur!" Gabriel barked, lunging forward and slamming the butt of his assault rifle against the reinforced locking mechanism of the heavy steel door. The metal groaned under the impact, but the heavy pneumatic bolts held fast, absorbing the force without yielding an inch.

Arthur Vance sat motionless in the high-backed leather chair, his pale blue eyes fixed not on Gabriel, but on the glowing terminal screen in front of him. A thin stream of blood trickled slowly from the corner of the old architect's mouth, staining the collar of his pristine white shirt. He didn't scream, and he didn't try to run. He simply let out a slow, shallow breath, his frail body slumping slightly forward against the edge of the metal desk.

"You're too late, Gabriel," Arthur whispered, his voice weak and raspy, yet still dripping with an unsettling, victorious calm. "The transmission... was already sent the moment you stepped through that door."

Gabriel didn't waste another second trying to break the door. He spun around, holstering his rifle and dropping down in front of the terminal. His fingers flew across the mechanical keyboard, attempting to trace the outgoing data packet before it could resolve its destination IP address. But the screen flashed a brilliant, blinding crimson, displaying a stark, unyielding warning across the monitor: *TRANSFER COMPLETE. SYSTEM PURGE INITIATED.*

"Damn it!" Gabriel muttered under his breath, ripping open the side panel of the computer console with his bare hands to physically disconnect the hard drives.

Inside the housing unit, there was no standard hard drive. Instead, the entire terminal was wired directly to a localized explosive charge no larger than a deck of cards, blinking with a steady, rhythmic red light.

Across the mountain base, the emergency klaxons suddenly changed pitch, shifting from a pulsing warning tone to a continuous, ear-splitting shriek. The holographic tactical table in the upper command center flashed an angry red as automated text streamed across every monitor: *EXTERNAL PERIMETER COMPROMISED — SECTOR ONE THROUGH FOUR BREACHED — HEAVY ASSAULT FORCE ENGAGED.*

Through the secure comms earpiece, Dante’s voice broke through the heavy static, breathless and urgent. "Boss! We've got multiple heavily armored tactical teams swarming the main hangar! They bypassed the exterior anti-aircraft batteries using a proprietary electromagnetic jamming code! They're heading straight for the residential wing where Clara and Lily are hiding!"

Gabriel’s heart skipped a beat. The realization hit him with the force of a physical blow: Arthur Vance was never the true mastermind. He was a decoy—a sacrifice designed to draw Gabriel away from the heart of the redoubt while the real strike force penetrated the inner sanctum to capture Clara and the child.

"Hold them off, Dante!" Gabriel roared into his comms, sprinting back toward the sealed steel door and slamming his shoulder against it with all his strength. "Do whatever it takes! I'm blowing this door open!"

He drew a high-explosive thermite charge from his tactical belt, slapping it directly against the center of the reinforced steel locking mechanism. He pressed the ignition pad, stepping back as a blinding white-hot flash of intense thermal energy hissed against the metal, melting through the thick steel bolts in a shower of brilliant sparks.

With a final kick, Gabriel sent the heavy door crashing inward, bursting out of the relay room and sprinting at full speed up the spiral maintenance staircase toward the residential wing, his mind consumed by a single, terrifying thought: *They aren't here for the syndicate. They're here for Lily.*
