Chapter 43 - The Mountain Stronghold

The Canadian Rockies rose out of the endless sea of white pine forests like jagged teeth of obsidian and ice, their towering peaks veiled in swirling blizzards and blinding whiteout conditions. Carved deep into the sheer granite face of Mount Logan was the Moretti family's secondary redoubt—an impenetrable, self-sustaining mountain fortress built during the height of the Cold War to withstand a direct nuclear strike.

The private jet touched down smoothly on the hidden, short-runway shelf carved into the side of the mountain, its landing gear hissing against the thick drifts of powdery snow. Massive steel blast doors set into the cliffside ground open automatically as the aircraft's transponder broadcasted the master encryption code, swallowing the jet into the warm, dimly lit subterranean hangar carved deep within the bedrock.

As the boarding ramp hissed downward, the biting, sub-zero wind rushed into the cabin, carrying the crisp, clean scent of high-altitude pine and ice. Gabriel was the first down the ramp, his assault rifle held at the ready, his eyes scanning the cavernous concrete interior of the mountain base.

Dante followed closely behind, hauling a still-handcuffed Arthur Vance down the steps, while Clara carried Lily wrapped tightly in her winter coat, stepping carefully onto the solid concrete floor.

"Secure the perimeter," Gabriel ordered a team of loyalist operatives who had been stationed at the mountain base and rushed out to meet them. "Activate the thermal perimeter sensors and lock down all secondary access tunnels. We have company inbound within the next few hours."

"Understood, Boss," the team lead replied, saluting crisply before barking orders to his men.

They moved deeper into the mountain complex, leaving the freezing hangar behind and entering the living quarters—a surprisingly luxurious subterranean sanctuary lined with heavy oak paneling, roaring stone fireplaces, and secure communication arrays. Clara gently tucked Lily into a warm, comfortable bed in one of the private guest suites, staying by her side until the little girl's breathing deepened into the peaceful rhythm of sleep.

When Clara stepped back out into the main command lounge, she found Gabriel standing over a large holographic tactical table, studying the real-time satellite feeds of the surrounding mountain passes. Dante was standing nearby, cleaning the slide of his Sig Sauer with an oiled cloth.

"Lily is asleep," Clara said softly, walking over to the table and resting her hand on Gabriel's arm. "How long do we have before they find us?"

"Not long," Gabriel replied, not taking his eyes off the holographic map. "The European Council doesn't rely on local agents. They use elite infiltration units—mercenaries trained in high-altitude alpine warfare. By dawn, they'll drop teams onto the ridge above us."

"And Arthur?" Clara asked, glancing toward the heavy steel holding cell off to the side of the room, where the old syndicate architect sat alone in the dark.

"Arthur is our insurance policy," Gabriel said coldly. "Or our bait. Depending on how they decide to play their hand."

Before Clara could respond, a shrill, piercing alarm klaxon blared across the entire mountain complex. The holographic tactical table flashed a violent, angry red, and the main system console spat out an automated warning text: *EXTERNAL PERIMETER BREACH — SECTOR FOUR — RIDGE-TOP VENTILATION SHAFT.*

Gabriel’s eyes snapped up to the main security monitor. On the screen, the thermal cameras showed a dozen ghostly, heat-emitting figures rappelling down the sheer vertical face of Mount Logan directly toward the hidden ventilation intake, clad in specialized thermal-insulating combat gear that blended seamlessly with the swirling snow.

"They're here," Dante muttered, chambering a fresh round with a sharp, metallic click.

Gabriel reached down, picking up his heavy assault rifle from the table, his expression hardening into an expression of absolute, lethal focus. "Let's go welcome them to the mountain."
