Chapter 32 - The Silent Confession

The cabin of the Moretti private jet was dead silent, save for the rhythmic, low-frequency hum of the jet engines slicing through the stratosphere at thirty-thousand feet.
Lily had finally cried herself to sleep, curled up on one of the plush leather couches under a thick cashmere blanket. Clara sat beside her, gently stroking the little girl’s soft, tangled curls. Her face was etched with exhaustion, her eyes red-rimmed from the biting wind and emotional trauma, but her spine remained remarkably straight.
Gabriel walked out of the cockpit, his tactical vest discarded, revealing a dark, sweat-stained shirt. He carried a warm cup of black coffee and a heavy woolen blanket. He walked slowly down the aisle, his dark eyes never leaving Clara’s face.
He stopped in front of her, gently draping the woolen blanket over her shivering shoulders. Clara didn't look up immediately. She kept her gaze fixed on Lily’s peaceful, sleeping face.
"You shouldn't have come after us, Gabriel," Clara said, her voice barely audible above the engine drone, devoid of its usual defensive sharpness—replaced instead by a heavy, hollow fatigue. "Julian would have traded us. The Bennett syndicate... they care about bloodlines, not people. I thought... if I walked away with them, you and Chicago would be safe."
Gabriel lowered himself slowly onto the opposite seat, resting his elbows on his knees. The harsh overhead cabin lights cast deep shadows across his rugged, scarred face.
"Safe?" Gabriel repeated, his voice dangerously soft. "You think my empire, my life, my very breath means a damn thing if you and Lily are sitting in a Bennett dungeon?"
Clara finally raised her emerald-green eyes, meeting his intense, unyielding gaze. There was no anger in her eyes now—only a terrifying, profound vulnerability. "Why, Gabriel? For months, I was just a maid in your house. Lily was just a little girl who didn't get a Christmas gift. Why turn the underworld upside down? Why risk a world war for us?"
Gabriel reached out, his large, calloused hand gently cupping her cheek. His thumb brushed away a lingering smudge of soot from her skin. His touch was surprisingly tender for a man whose hands were stained with the blood of half the syndicate capos in the Midwest.
"Because the moment that little girl looked at me on Christmas Eve and asked why the world forgot her... I realized something terrifying," Gabriel murmured, his voice thick with unexpressed emotion. "I had all the power, all the gold, all the territory in the world... and my life was completely empty. You and Lily didn't just walk into my estate, Clara. You broke into a vault that had been locked for thirty years. And I will burn every syndicate from Montreal to Rome to the ash before I let anyone take you from me again."

Clara’s breath hitched. For a second, the heavy armor she had worn around her heart cracked, a single tear slipping down her cheek to brush against his thumb.
Before either of them could speak, the encrypted satellite phone in Gabriel’s pocket vibrated violently, shattering the fragile intimacy of the cabin.
