Chapter 37 - The Catwalk Crossfire

The red laser dots danced across Dante’s chest like a swarm of angry, glowing insects. From the elevated steel catwalks lining the perimeter of the cavernous hangar, twenty heavily armed mercenaries materialized out of the shadows, their heavy-caliber assault rifles trained downward with absolute, unflinching precision.

"Dante, hold your fire!" Gabriel shouted sharply, his eyes darting upward to assess the tactical disadvantage. They were trapped in a classic kill zone—surrounded on the open concrete floor with zero natural cover, save for the idling fuselage of their hijacked jet behind them.

Arthur Vance chuckled softly, leaning heavily on his silver-headed cane as he took another deliberate step forward. "A commendable display of loyalty, Gabriel, but entirely futile. In this room, equations are solved with mathematics, not muscle. You are standing on the very foundation where the syndicate wrote its first death warrants fifty years ago. Do you honestly believe I didn't plan for every bullet in your magazine?"

Clara lowered Lily behind the heavy, reinforced steel bulk of the landing gear strut, using her own body as a shield while her hands gripped a discarded tactical submachine gun Dante had dropped earlier. Her face was pale, devoid of fear, replaced entirely by a cold, calculating resolve that mirrored the men surrounding her. She had spent her entire childhood hiding in the shadows of monsters; she refused to let her daughter die in one.

"Mommy, what's going to happen?" Lily whispered, her voice trembling as she pressed her small hands over her ears to block out the oppressive mechanical hum of the hangar.

"Nothing bad, my sweet angel," Clara whispered back, her voice steady and fierce as she checked the safety switch of the weapon. "Keep your head down, close your eyes, and count to a hundred. When you open them, we're going home."

Across the open floor, Gabriel locked eyes with Dante for a fraction of a second. In the brutal, unspoken language of men who had survived a hundred war zones, a complete tactical plan was communicated and agreed upon in a heartbeat.

"You're right about one thing, Arthur," Gabriel said, his voice ringing loud and clear across the hollow concrete space as he slowly slid his hand toward a concealed secondary charge controller on his belt. "We are standing on a tomb. But tombs have a funny way of burying everyone inside them."

Before Arthur could issue the order to fire, Gabriel slammed his palm down onto the detonator switch.

A deafening, earth-shattering explosion ripped through the western support pillar of the hangar. Tons of reinforced concrete and shattered bedrock cascaded downward in a violent avalanche of gray dust and twisted iron rebar, directly between Arthur Vance and his advance strike team, severing their communications and plunging the catwalks into chaotic darkness.

"Now! Move!" Gabriel roared, drawing his secondary weapon as a chaotic crossfire erupted across the hangar floor, turning the freezing subterranean vault into a blinding storm of flashing muzzle fire and screaming steel.
