Chapter 35 - The Frost-Bitten Tomb

The heavy, reinforced landing gear of the Moretti private jet slammed against the subterranean runway with a bone-rattling thud, kicking up plumes of frozen concrete dust that hissed against the exterior alloy hull. The sprawling hangar carved deep into the bedrock of Lake Michigan was an architectural ghost of the Cold War—a cavernous, brutalist vault of reinforced gray steel and oxidized iron beams that stretched for nearly a mile in every direction. Red emergency strobes pulsed rhythmically along the curved walls, casting long, erratic shadows that danced across the rows of vacant docking bays.

Gabriel Moretti stood motionless in the center of the cabin aisle, his dark eyes locked on the massive pneumatic blast doors at the far end of the runway, which were slowly grinding open to reveal an impenetrable wall of darkness. His tactical vest was buckled tightly across his chest, the weight of extra magazines and communication gear a familiar, grounding pressure against his ribs. Beside him, Dante checked the slide of his Sig Sauer with a sharp, metallic snap, his jaw set in a hard, unyielding line.

"The electromagnetic tractor beam has completely fried our internal navigation systems," Dante muttered, his voice low and tense as he glanced down at his flickering tactical tablet. "We’re cut off from the outside network. No satellite uplink, no encrypted radio frequencies. If we trigger an SOS, it’s just bouncing against solid granite."

Clara stood up from the leather seat, holding a shivering Lily tightly against her chest. The little girl’s eyes were wide with a quiet, terrified comprehension that far exceeded her tender years. She clutched a frayed edge of Clara’s green shawl, her small chest rising and falling in shallow, rapid breaths.

"Mommy, are we trapped down here?" Lily whispered, her voice barely audible over the deafening, mechanical roar of the hangar doors sliding into the freezing rock.

Clara forced a calm, reassuring smile onto her pale face, pressing a gentle kiss to her daughter's forehead, though her own heart was hammering a frantic rhythm against her ribs. "No, my sweet girl. We’re just visiting a place your grandfather kept locked away. Stay close to Mr. Dante, and keep your eyes on me, okay?"

Gabriel stepped forward, placing a heavy, gloved hand gently on Clara’s shoulder. His touch was warm, an anchor of absolute defiance in a freezing wasteland of betrayal. "They want the bloodline," Gabriel said, his voice dropping to a low, lethal register that resonated with cold fury. "They want the founders' ledger and the names of every capo who built this syndicate. They brought us straight to their doorstep because they thought we’d crawl. They’re about to learn what happens when you corner a Moretti."

With a deafening pneumatic hiss, the final locks disengaged, and the blast doors swung fully open. A freezing gust of dead, stale air rushed into the hangar, carrying the unmistakable scent of rust, damp earth, and dried blood.

Out of the suffocating darkness beyond the threshold, a slow, rhythmic sound echoed across the empty concrete floor—the distinct, heavy clack of tactical boots stepping forward in unison. A dozen figures emerged from the shadows, clad in unmarked, obsidian-black combat gear. Their faces were obscured by full-face ballistic helmets fitted with glowing blue optical visors that cut through the dim red emergency light like a pack of hunting wolves closing in on a wounded deer. At the center of the formation walked a tall, imposing figure whose dark trench coat billowed slightly in the draft, leaning heavily on an ornate, silver-headed cane.

"Welcome home, Clara," a synthesized, modulated voice echoed from the lead figure's comm-unit, dripping with a sickening, theatrical warmth. "And welcome to your final resting place, Gabriel."

Gabriel didn't hesitate. He raised his customized sidearm, his finger resting lightly on the trigger, and stepped deliberately in front of Clara and Lily, his body forming an impenetrable wall of steel and vengeance between his family and the ghosts of the syndicate's bloody past.
