Chapter 30 - The Crossfire on the Tarmac

The deafening roar of high-explosive charges tore through the frigid Canadian air, shattering the eerie silence of the isolated Montreal airstrip. Orange and crimson flames blossomed against the stark white backdrop of snow, licking the dark steel hulls of the newly arrived armored personnel carriers. The heavy steel gates had been blown completely off their reinforced tracks, crashing onto the frost-rimed asphalt with a metallic shriek that vibrated through the soles of Gabriel Moretti’s heavy boots.

"Ambush! Spread out!" Dante bellowed, his voice cutting cleanly through the howling winter gale as he shoved Gabriel behind the reinforced wheel of the idling Moretti jet.

Gabriel didn't flinch. His dark eyes remained locked on the center of the tarmac, where Julian Bennett stood unflinching beside the terrified little form of Lily and the resolute, pale figure of Clara. The elderly patriarch of the Bennett syndicate watched the ensuing chaos with the chilling detachment of a chess grandmaster observing a sacrificed pawn. But the sudden arrival of the third, unidentified syndicate—bearing a crest of a silver viper wrapped around a dagger—had upended Julian’s calculations just as fiercely as it threatened Gabriel’s rescue operation.

From the turrets of the heavy armored vehicles, twin-linked heavy machine guns opened fire, sweeping a devastating curtain of lead across the open space. Bullets chewed into the tarmac, sending blinding plumes of concrete dust and frozen shards into the air.

"Boss! They're not targeting us—they're cutting off the Bennett extraction route!" Dante yelled over the deafening rattle of automatic gunfire, chambering a fresh round into his rifle as he returned suppressing fire toward the oncoming convoy.

Through the swirling smoke and blinding snow, heavily armored operatives poured from the back of the third-party transports. They wore matte-gray tactical plate carriers marked with the silver viper insignia, their movements terrifyingly synchronized, disciplined, and brutal. They bypassed Gabriel’s position entirely, swarming directly toward Julian Bennett’s private Gulfstream and the security detail surrounding Clara and Lily.

Julian’s face twisted in sudden, genuine fury. The ancient patriarch dropped his silver detonator—the red LED light blinking uselessly in the snow—and barked orders at his men in rapid French. "Kill them! Do not let them take the girl!"

A violent firefight erupted between the Bennett loyalists and the mysterious viper mercenaries. Gunfire echoed off the steel hangars, flashes of muzzle light painting the arctic night in shades of violent amber and electric blue.

Gabriel saw his opening. Amidst the deafening chaos of flying brass and shattering glass, Clara pulled Lily down behind the bulk of a snow-plow, shielding the little girl’s head with her own body. A mercenary in gray armor lunged toward them, his rifle raised.

"No!" Gabriel roared, a primal sound of pure, unadulterated fury that ripped from the depths of his chest.

Moving with lethal, predatory speed, Gabriel vaulted from behind the landing gear of his jet, his Glock spitting fire through the blinding blizzard. Two rounds caught the armored operative squarely in the visor, dropping him instantly into the crimson-stained snow. Gabriel didn't stop. He sprinted across the freezing asphalt, dodging a hail of crossfire, his eyes fixed entirely on the woman he loved and the child who had stolen his cold, hardened heart.
