Chapter 12 - The Sealed Letter

Clara was in the sunlit library on the second floor, watching Lily arrange a set of hand-carved wooden animal figures across a low velvet ottoman. The room smelled of old paper, leather, and vanilla, a tranquil sanctuary far removed from the cold underground corridors Clara had spent months scrubbing.

The heavy library doors opened, and Gabriel entered, his coat unbuttoned, his demeanor composed yet intensely guarded. In his gloved hand, he carried a heavy cream envelope with a gold seal bearing the Great Seal of the State of Illinois.

Clara noticed the solemnity in his eyes and stood up immediately, her maternal instincts flaring. “Gabriel? Is something wrong?”

Lily looked up from her toys, holding up a wooden bear. “Look, Gabriel! The bear found a cave!”

Gabriel’s eyes softened momentarily as he looked down at the little girl. “That’s a very good cave, Lily. Stay here with Mrs. Gable for a few minutes while your mama and I talk, alright?”

Mrs. Gable stepped into the room, gently taking a seat beside Lily and handing her a wooden deer. Lily was immediately absorbed back into her play.

Gabriel gestured toward the far alcove of the library, near a pair of towering bookshelves that overlooked the snow-dusted conservatory. Clara followed him, her heart drumming against her ribs.

“What is that?” Clara asked, nodding toward the envelope.

“A courier brought this to the gate fifteen minutes ago,” Gabriel explained quietly. “It passed chemical and explosive screening. It’s clean. But the sender is Senator Richard Hayes.”

Clara gasped, her eyes widening in horror. “Senator Hayes? But... Julian used to work as a junior auditor for Hayes’s campaign committee before he went to Vanguard Logistics! Julian trusted him!”

Gabriel’s jaw hardened. “Julian was naive, Clara. Or Hayes played him until he became a liability.”

Gabriel slid a silver letter opener through the top seam and pulled out a single sheet of heavy embossed stationery. He unfolded it and held it so Clara could read beside him.

The message was typed, concise, and chillingly polite:

*Dear Clara,*

*I was deeply relieved to learn through mutual acquaintances that you and young Lily survived the unfortunate events surrounding Julian’s tragic demise. Julian was a brilliant young man, but he became entangled in matters far beyond his comprehension.*

*I am aware that you are currently residing under the protection of Mr. Gabriel Moretti. While Mr. Moretti possesses considerable resources in our city, he cannot protect you from the federal and international jurisdictions that are currently closing around Vanguard’s assets.*

*Julian left an item behind—a small, personal keepsake that belongs to the committee. If you deliver that item to my private residence in Lake Forest before midnight tomorrow, I will personally guarantee your immunity, grant you full witness protection under the Department of Justice, and provide an irrevocable trust fund of ten million dollars for Lily’s future.*

*If you choose to remain with Mr. Moretti, I cannot prevent the storm that will descend upon his estate. Do not allow your daughter to pay the price for Julian’s obstinance.*

*With deepest sympathy,*

*Senator Richard Hayes*

Clara stared at the letter, her hands trembling as the words burned into her vision. “He wants the drive. The flash drive inside Lily’s toy bear.”

“He knows you have it,” Gabriel said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy calm. “And he thinks he can frighten you into handing it over with empty promises of federal immunity.”

“Would he... would he really send people here?” Clara whispered, glancing across the room at her innocent daughter laughing with the housekeeper. “Gabriel, you’ve already risked your men, your home, your life for us. If a United States Senator is behind this—”

Gabriel reached out, his warm, bare hand gently grasping Clara’s chin, forcing her to look up directly into his dark, unwavering eyes.

“Listen to me, Clara,” Gabriel commanded softly, the sheer power in his voice arresting the panic in her chest. “Richard Hayes may carry a title in Washington, but in Chicago, he is nothing more than a thief who bought his suit with blood money. He brought Victor Rossi into your life. He ordered the hit on Julian. And he had the audacity to send a threat to my front door.”

“What are we going to do?” Clara asked, her voice wavering.

“We don't negotiate with snakes,” Gabriel said, his thumb brushing tenderly across her cheekbone. “We cut off their heads.”

He folded the letter and handed it back to Dante, who had just stepped silently into the alcove.

May you like

“Dante,” Gabriel said without breaking eye contact with Clara. “Prepare the convoy. And tell our contacts at the Department of Justice’s Special Investigations Division in Washington that I have an early New Year’s gift for them.”
