Chapter 40 - The Tremor Beneath the Marble

The deep, guttural groaning of fractured bedrock echoed like the dying roar of a subterranean leviathan. Beneath their feet, the massive stone floor of the Cold War bunker pitched violently, throwing Clara off balance and forcing Gabriel to lunge forward, catching her by the waist just as a jagged fissure cracked open across the polished marble. Dust and pulverized concrete rained down from the vaulted ceiling in a choking, blinding storm, punctuated by the shrieking whine of stressed steel beams bending beyond their breaking point.

Arthur Vance stood behind the mahogany desk, his white hair disheveled by the sudden concussive wave, yet his pale blue eyes burned with a manic, triumphant fire. He didn't try to run. He didn't try to raise his weapon. Instead, he gripped the edge of the desk with both hands, his body shaking with a dark, victorious laughter that cut through the cacophony of the collapsing subterranean vault.

"You're too late, children!" Arthur screamed over the rising roar of the self-destruct sequence. "The seismic charges are tied directly to the subterranean shelf of Lake Michigan! In less than three minutes, millions of tons of freezing water will rush into this tomb, washing away every name in the ledger, every drop of blood spilled on these stones, and every single one of us!"

Gabriel didn't waste a single second on words. His survival instincts, honed in a hundred lethal battlefields, took absolute control. In one fluid motion, he snatched the leather-bound ledger off the desk, tucking it securely inside his tactical vest. Simultaneously, Dante vaulted over the fallen steel vault door, his Sig Sauer still leveled directly at Arthur's chest.

"Move! Now!" Gabriel roared, grabbing Clara by the shoulder and pulling her toward the exit as Dante grabbed Arthur by the collar of his trench coat, hoisting the elderly mastermind off his feet with brutal efficiency.

"Let me go, you insolent fool!" Arthur snarled, thrashing against Dante’s iron grip, though his manic smile never faded. "We go down together! The bloodline ends here!"

"Keep your breath, old man, you're going to need it for the swim," Dante snapped, slamming the butt of his pistol against Arthur’s temple with a dull *thud*. The syndicate architect went limp instantly, his heavy frame dead weight in Dante's arms as they sprinted out of the inner sanctum and back into the sprawling, smoke-filled hangar bay.

The hangar was a chaotic war zone of fire and falling debris. Through the dense clouds of white sulfur and gray dust, the sleek silhouette of their hijacked private jet stood idling on the cracked runway, its red emergency lights pulsing frantically against the gloom. Lily stood at the top of the open boarding stairs, her small hands gripping the handrails, her face pale with terror as she watched the floor beneath her buckle and split apart.

"Get on the plane! Move, move, move!" Gabriel shouted, firing his backup weapon into the shadows as a lone, surviving mercenary stumbled out of the smoke with a raised rifle. The Moretti loyalist’s bullet dropped the attacker instantly, sending him crashing into the expanding fissure in the floor.

Clara scrambled up the metal stairs first, scooping Lily into her arms and hauling her inside the secure cabin as the entire aircraft shuddered violently from another massive underground tremor. Dante dragged the unconscious form of Arthur Vance up the ramp just behind them, dumping the old man unceremoniously onto the cabin floor like a sack of garbage.

Gabriel was the last to board, his boots hitting the threshold just as a massive section of the hangar ceiling collapsed inward, crushing the rear half of the runway under tons of jagged concrete and twisted iron beams. He slammed the heavy pneumatic hatch closed, spinning the locking wheel with all his strength to seal the cabin against the rising tide of dust and freezing mist.

"Take us out! Now!" Gabriel yelled into the cockpit comms, throwing himself into the copilot seat and slamming his fingers across the digital flight console. "Initiate emergency takeoff sequence before the bedrock completely gives way!"

The twin jet engines shrieked to a deafening, ear-splitting crescendo, vibrating the entire airframe as the aircraft surged forward along the fracturing runway. Ahead of them, the massive pneumatic blast doors were only half open, jammed midway by the falling debris from the ceiling.

"We're not going to clear the clearance height!" Dante shouted from the back, bracing himself against the cabin bulkhead as the jet barreled toward the narrow, obstructed exit at terminal velocity.

"Hold on to something!" Gabriel roared back, locking his eyes on the sliver of gray light waiting on the other side of the crushed steel doors.
