Chapter 34 - The Unbroken Horizon

The primary electrical grid of the Moretti Gulfstream went completely dead. The roaring hum of the jet engines stuttered, dropping in pitch as the automated flight computer disengaged, leaving the aircraft gliding blindly through the sub-zero stratospheric gale.

"We've lost all avionics! The hydraulic steering is locked!" Dante shouted from the cockpit doorway, his fingers flying across his tactical tablet as sparks showered from the overhead wiring. "Boss, someone just uploaded an override virus directly into our flight control module from a ground station below!"

Gabriel didn't hesitate. He grabbed Clara and pulled her protectively behind the heavy leather bulkhead, shielding Lily with his own body as the aircraft began a steep, jarring descent that pressed them heavily against the floorboards.

"Dante! Manual override! Pull the mechanical backup cables!" Gabriel bellowed over the howling wind screaming against the exterior hull.

Through the reinforced cockpit window, the dense, unbroken blanket of clouds suddenly parted. Below them, stretching across the dark, frozen expanse of Lake Michigan near the northern border, a massive, illuminated industrial complex glowed like a sprawling city of steel and fire—an installation that did not exist on any official map, bearing the exact same silver viper crest that had ambushed them in Montreal.

Clara clutched Gabriel’s arm, her knuckles white, her eyes reflecting the flickering red emergency lights. "Gabriel... that's Sector Zero. My grandfather's journals... they mentioned it only in code. It’s where the syndicate built its entire network during the Cold War."

The jet shuddered violently as it leveled out just above the tree line, caught in a powerful electromagnetic tractor beam that pulled the aircraft inexorably toward a hidden subterranean runway carved directly into the frozen bedrock of the shore.

Inside the dim cabin, Lily stirred, her small hands blindly searching for Clara in the dark. "Mommy? Are we landing?"

Clara pulled her daughter close, kissing her forehead. "Yes, my sweet girl. We're home."

Gabriel rose to his feet, his dark eyes fixed on the massive steel hangar doors opening below them to welcome their hijacked jet. He drew his customized sidearm, checked the magazine with a sharp, lethal click, and looked back at Dante and Clara with the cold, absolute authority of a warlord stepping onto his final battlefield.

"Lock and load," Gabriel whispered, as the wheels of the aircraft touched down on the hidden ice. "Let's see who's waiting for us in the dark."

The heavy hangar doors slammed shut behind them, sealing the syndicate, the family, and the terrifying secrets of the past inside a frozen tomb from which there was no turning back.
