Chapter 44 - The Ridge-Top Ambush

The sub-zero wind howled through the high-altitude ventilation shaft like a pack of starving wolves, carrying stinging ice crystals that whipped across the armored catwalks of Sector Four. Gabriel moved in absolute silence, his boots making no sound against the industrial steel grating as he led Dante and two loyalist operatives up the spiral maintenance staircase toward the surface intake.

Above them, the heavy steel security grates of the ventilation shaft shuddered violently. A blinding flash of blue-white light illuminated the freezing tunnel as an explosive thermite charge melted through the thick iron bars with a blinding hiss of white-hot sparks and thick, acrid smoke.

"They're dropping a thermal cord," Dante whispered, positioning himself behind a concrete pillar with his assault rifle leveled dead at the ceiling opening.

"Hold your fire until the first man clears the lip," Gabriel commanded quietly, his finger resting lightly on the trigger of his rifle, his dark eyes locked on the smoking breach above.

Through the swirling smoke and falling debris, a heavily armored operative dropped smoothly down the rope, landing with practiced grace onto the metal catwalk. A second and third operative followed immediately, their obsidian-black tactical gear and glowing blue optical visors cutting through the dim emergency lights of the tunnel.

Before the lead mercenary could raise his weapon, Gabriel gave the signal.

"Now!"

A deafening volley of controlled gunfire erupted in the confined space, turning the concrete tunnel into a flashing storm of muzzle fire and screaming steel. The lead operative crumpled instantly, his chest riddled with rounds before his boots even hit the grating. The second mercenary managed to return fire, sending a burst of high-caliber rounds ricocheting off the concrete wall dangerously close to Gabriel’s head, but Dante’s return fire was swift and merciless, dropping the attacker with a clean shot through the visor.

"Clear!" Dante shouted over the ringing echoes of gunfire in the enclosed shaft.

Gabriel stepped forward, kicking away the fallen mercenary's weapon and ripping the tactical helmet off the dead man's head. The face beneath was unrecognizable—a young man with cold, dead eyes and a professional tattoo burned into the base of his neck: the crest of the European Council's elite intervention unit.

"They're not holding back," Gabriel muttered, inspecting the encrypted military-grade comms unit strapped to the dead mercenary's forearm. He pressed the master retrieval button, downloading the live tactical squad data straight to his own tactical console.

As the data stream flooded his screen, a secondary encrypted audio file automatically popped up, pulsing with a blinking green notification light. Gabriel tapped the audio play button.

A familiar, smooth, yet chillingly calm voice filled the freezing tunnel—not the synthesized voice from earlier, but a real, human voice dripping with an aristocratic, terrifying arrogance.

*"Impressive defense, Mr. Moretti,"* the voice purred smoothly from the dead agent's comm unit. *"You survived the bunker, you survived the Alps, and you managed to swat our advance scouts. But you are fighting an ocean with a tin cup. The entire mountain is currently surrounded by three hundred elite operatives. You have twenty-four hours to walk out of that mountain stronghold alone, leave the ledger and the child behind, and surrender your bloodline to the Council. If you refuse... we won't just bury this mountain. We will erase every trace of the Moretti name from the earth forever."*

The audio transmission clicked dead, leaving only the howling of the mountain wind echoing through the bullet-scarred tunnel.

Gabriel stood motionless in the freezing draft, staring down at the encrypted comm unit in his hand. Dante stepped up beside him, his face grim as he looked toward the heavy steel blast doors leading deeper into the mountain base where Clara and Lily were waiting.

"Boss," Dante said quietly, his voice heavy with unspoken gravity. "What do we do?"

May you like

Gabriel slowly raised his head, his dark eyes reflecting the cold, unyielding fire of a man who had backed himself into the ultimate corner—and found he still held all the winning cards.

"We don't surrender," Gabriel said, his voice ringing with absolute, chilling finality. "We take the fight to them."
