Chapter 33 - The Ghost in the Network

Gabriel pulled the encrypted satellite device from his pocket. The screen flashed a high-priority, red-alert signal originating from a deep-sub-level relay station in downtown Chicago—a frequency reserved exclusively for the inner council’s master archives.
"Dante," Gabriel called out without looking away from Clara.
Dante emerged from the cockpit hallway instantly, his tablet in hand, his face pale under the dim emergency lighting. "I saw it, Boss. The ping isn't from Chicago. It's an automated decoy bounce routed through three offshore proxies."
"Who's on the other end?" Gabriel demanded, his jaw clenching as he answered the secure line and punched the speakerphone icon.
Static hissed from the small speaker, followed by a heavy, deliberate intake of breath. Then, a voice spoke—distorted by a voice-scrambler, yet carrying an unmistakable, chilling cadence that made Gabriel’s blood run instantly cold.
*"Congratulations on surviving the Montreal welcoming committee, grandson-in-law,"* the distorted voice rasped, dripping with dark amusement. *"Did you really think Julian Bennett was the head of the snake? Did you truly believe a regional family feud could mobilize Quebec Special Operations and unregistered viper units overnight?"*
Gabriel stood up slowly, towering over the cabin table. His eyes narrowed into lethal slits. "Identify yourself. You've got about ten seconds before I trace this frequency and drop a missile on your coordinates."
A low, mocking laugh echoed through the speaker. *"You can't drop a missile on a ghost, Gabriel. And you certainly can't kill a legacy that was built before your grandfather even learned how to hold a gun. The ledger you found in the Vitucci sub-level? The names you thought you burned with Marcus Rossi? They were only page one."*
Clara stood up from the couch, stepping closer to Gabriel, her eyes wide with sudden realization. "That voice... I've heard it before. In the halls of the Bennett estate, when I was a child. It belongs to the Shadow Council."
*"Smart girl,"* the voice purred over the encrypted line. *"Clara Bennett—or should I say, Clara Moretti now? You carry the true bloodline of the syndicate founders. That is why Julian wanted you back. And that is why your husband's entire coalition is about to collapse from the inside."*
"Keep talking," Gabriel growled, gesturing frantically for Dante to lock down the plane's communication grid and initiate a deep-space trace. "Give me a location."
May you like
*"Location? You're already flying right over it, Gabriel,"* the voice whispered softly. *"Look down at the Great Lakes below you. The war for the throne was never about Chicago, Montreal, or the Midwest. It was about what was buried beneath the ice fifty years ago. And tonight... the ice is breaking."*
Before Dante could scream a warning, the private jet’s navigation screens flickered violently, turning entirely black. The cabin lights died, plunging them into absolute darkness, save for the emergency red floor strips glowing eerily against the carpet.
