Chapter 10 - Rosalie's Awakening

Twenty-four hours later, the storm had cleared from the skies above Blackwood County.
The local hospital had been completely evacuated of civilian patients and re-established as a temporary federal field clinic. Outside, federal agents from the FBI, DOJ, and CID were loading boxes of records from the county courthouse into unmarked vans. Blackwood County’s power structure had been dismantled root and stem in less than a day.
In Room 4, the afternoon sun filtered through the blinds, casting warm golden stripes across Rosalie’s bed.
She was propped up on pillows now, her breathing calm and steady. Her casts were fresh, her bruises slowly turning a lighter shade of yellow-green. Beside her sat Alexander, clean-shaven, dressed in his crisp Army service uniform.
Rosalie watched him quietly, her eyes clear, full of a mixture of profound relief and lingering sorrow.
"They took mother?" she asked, her voice still hoarse from the breathing tube.
"She’s in federal detention awaiting arraignment," Alexander replied, holding her hand. "Julian is in a holding cell in Norfolk. Neither of them will ever see daylight outside of a prison yard again."
Rosalie swallowed hard, looking toward the window. "I kept thinking... while I was lying on the living room floor... that maybe I was crazy. That maybe I should have just signed the papers and let them have the land. Let them keep their dirty money."
"You did what was right, Rose," Alexander said softly, lifting her bruised knuckles to his lips. "You fought for the truth."
"I fought because I knew you were coming home," she whispered, a faint, beautiful smile breaking through her swollen lips. "I kept counting the seconds between the blows. I told myself... *Alexander is coming. Just stay alive until Alexander gets here.*"
Alexander’s throat tightened. He leaned in, resting his forehead gently against hers. "I will never leave you unprotected again, Rose. I swear on my life."
She reached up with her uninjured hand, cupping his jaw, feeling the fresh scar on his cheek. "What happens to us now, Alex? The Miller name is ruined. This town is destroyed. Where do we go?"
Alexander looked at her, his eyes steady and resolute. "Wherever you want. We leave this county behind. We build our own life, far away from their shadows."
A soft knock interrupted them.
Major Elena Rios stood at the door, her face uncharacteristically pale. She held a red-tabbed classified folder under her arm.

"Commander Sinclair," Elena said quietly. "You need to see this."
