Chapter 5 - The Heir's Sins

The Obsidian Room sat on the fourth floor of a converted warehouse overlooking Blackwood Harbor. From the street, it looked like an abandoned freight building, but inside, velvet wallpaper, crystal chandeliers, and cigar smoke masked the stench of corruption.

Julian Miller sat in a circular leather booth surrounded by half-empty champagne bottles. Across from him sat two men in dark suits—representatives from Vanguard Global.

"The doctor said the sister won't last until dawn," Julian said, taking a long drag from a fat Cuban cigar. He chuckled, his earlier panic at the hospital completely erased by alcohol. "My mother has the death certificate already drafted. Accidental organ failure following home invasion. The county coroner is our man. The problem is erased."

One of the Vanguard reps frowned. "What about her husband? That soldier boy?"

Julian waved a dismissive hand. "A nobody. An enlisted grunt Catherine let Rosalie marry because she thought it would keep the girl docile. The fool made some empty threats at the hospital, but he's out of his depth. My mother’s lawyers will have a restraining order slapped on him by sunrise. If he makes a scene, the sheriff will throw him into a holding cell and lose the key."

Suddenly, the lights throughout the entire club flickered and went out.

The electronic music died with an eerie whir. The room plunged into pitch-black darkness, save for the red emergency exit signs. Murmurs of confusion rippled through the patrons and high-end gamblers.

"What the hell?" Julian snapped, reaching for his phone. "Hey! Bartender! Get the generator on!"

A muffled thud echoed from the private entrance. Then another. The heavy oak doors swung open.

A single tactical flare was tossed into the center of the room. It hissed to life, bathing the opulent lounge in harsh, blinding crimson light.

Through the red smoke stepped Alexander Sinclair.

He was in full black tactical gear, unmasked, his eyes locked onto Julian. Beside him walked Hayes and four operators carrying suppressed carbines. Two of Julian’s bodyguards reached for their waistbands, but before their hands could clear leather, suppressed gunshots cracked like dry twigs. Both guards collapsed with non-lethal, incapacitating rounds through their shoulders, howling in agony on the carpet.

Patrons screamed, diving beneath blackjack tables and scattering toward the fire exits, only to find the doors barricaded from the outside.

Alexander walked steadily toward Julian’s booth. The Vanguard contractors reached for their weapons, but stopped when red laser dots converged precisely on their foreheads.

"Hands on the table," Hayes commanded. "Interfere, and your families won't even find your teeth."

The contractors slowly placed their palms flat on the glass table.

Julian was frozen, his cigar falling from his slack jaw, burning a hole through his thousand-dollar trousers. He scrambled backward against the leather cushion, trembling violently. "Sinclair! You... you're crazy! This is private property! You can't do this!"

Alexander reached across the table, grabbed Julian by his silk necktie, and hauled him across the glass, sending crystal glasses shattering to the floor. He slammed Julian’s face onto the table, pressing his heavy combat boot down on Julian’s right hand—the same hand Julian had waved so dismissively hours ago.

"Twenty-seven fractures, Julian," Alexander whispered into his ear.

Julian screamed as Alexander slowly applied pressure with his heel. "Stop! Please! It wasn't me! It was Catherine! She told me to clean up the mess!"

"Who kicked her ribs, Julian? Who swung the iron bar?" Alexander pressed harder. Bones began to groan beneath the boot.

"I didn't want to!" Julian sobbed, snot and tears mixing with the spilled champagne on the table. "She was going to expose the Vanguard shipments! She had the manifests! Mother said if Rosalie went public, we’d lose everything! We’d go to federal prison! I just wanted the password to her drive! She wouldn't give it to me! She kept laughing at me... she kept saying you’d come home and tear my world apart!"

Alexander leaned down, his face inches from Julian’s terrified eyes. "And she was right."

Alexander eased his foot off Julian’s hand. Before Julian could breathe a sigh of relief, Alexander struck him with the butt of his pistol across the jaw. Julian’s head snapped back, three teeth flying across the room as he collapsed unconscious to the floor.

Alexander turned to the two Vanguard representatives who sat petrified in their seats.

"Tell your executive board in Virginia that Captain Alexander Sinclair sends his regards," Alexander said calmly. "Tell them to prepare their legal defense, because by morning, their clearance is revoked, their assets are frozen, and their domestic operations are being dismantled."

He looked down at the bleeding, unconscious Julian. "Hayes. Zip-tie this piece of garbage. He’s our guest of honor tonight."
