Chapter 6 - The County Shuts Down

At 03:00 hours, Sheriff Thomas Vance stood on the steps of the Blackwood County Courthouse, staring in disbelief at the convoy of black military transport vehicles rolling down Main Street.

Dozens of state police cruisers accompanied them, but they weren't leading the convoy. Above the town, two Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawks hovered low, their searchlights sweeping across the courthouse square, turning the quiet night into an active war zone.

Vance’s phone buzzed incessantly. It was Catherine Miller. He ignored it for the fifth time. His gut told him that answering that phone right now was equivalent to stepping onto a live landmine.

A black tactical SUV pulled up directly in front of the courthouse steps. Alexander stepped out, followed by Hayes, who dragged a zip-tied, bruised Julian Miller behind him like a sack of dirty laundry.

"Alexander!" Vance shouted over the rotor wash, running down the steps. "What have you done? Catherine has called the Governor’s office! She’s screaming treason, kidnapping, domestic terrorism!"

"Let her scream," Alexander said, tossing a thick dossier onto the hood of Vance’s patrol cruiser.

Vance stared at the folder. "What is this?"

"That is eight years of human trafficking manifests, defense contract embezzlement, and state-level bribery tied directly to Catherine Miller, Julian Miller, and six members of your department," Alexander said. "Including your deputy chief."

Vance’s stomach dropped. He opened the folder with shaking hands. Inside were wire transfers, photographic evidence of midnight dock transfers, and authenticated financial records signed by Catherine Miller’s personal notary.

"God almighty..." Vance whispered, his voice trembling. "She told me... she told me they were just moving untaxed luxury goods. Electronics, high-end spirits..."

"You willfully turned a blind eye because her money kept your department funded," Alexander said coldly. "Julian just confessed to the assault on Rosalie. On tape. Under full audio-visual recording. He also admitted that Catherine ordered the assassination of Richard Miller eight years ago."

Vance looked up, horror written across his weathered face. "Richard? But that was ruled an accident! The brakes failed on Route 9!"

"The brake lines were severed by an operative on Catherine’s payroll," Alexander said. "She killed her husband for the inheritance, and she tried to kill her daughter to preserve the empire."

Before Vance could speak, the courthouse doors opened. Catherine Miller stepped out onto the portico. She was flanked by three high-priced corporate attorneys and an older man in a tailored three-piece suit—Judge Harold Sterling, the chief magistrate of the county.

"Alexander Sinclair!" Judge Sterling bellowed, his voice echoing off the limestone columns. "Release Julian Miller immediately! I have issued an emergency injunction and an arrest warrant for your immediate detention on charges of assault, kidnapping, and treason!"

Catherine stood beside the judge, her coat wrapped tightly around her, her eyes blazing with aristocratic fury. "You pathetic little soldier. Did you really think you could storm my city, assault my son, and walk away? I own this courthouse. I own this state’s judiciary. You are a bug beneath my heel, Alexander. Hand over my son, or you will spend the rest of your miserable life rotting in a supermax facility!"

Alexander walked slowly up the courthouse steps. He didn't draw a weapon. He didn't shout. He simply climbed until he was standing three feet from Catherine and the judge.

"Judge Sterling," Alexander said evenly. "At 0245 hours, the Attorney General of the United States, acting on executive authority from the Department of Defense, unsealed a federal indictment against you for accepting three point two million dollars in offshore kickbacks from Vanguard Global."

Judge Sterling’s face turned an ashen shade of gray. "That’s... that’s absurd! You have no jurisdiction!"

"Look up, Judge," Alexander said, pointing toward the hovering Black Hawks. "Those aren't state police. That is the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment. This entire county has been placed under Title 10 Federal Jurisdiction due to threats against national security."

Alexander turned to Catherine. For the first time, Catherine’s arrogant sneer faltered. Her bottom lip trembled.

May you like

"You said I was just an expendable soldier, Catherine," Alexander murmured. "You forgot one thing. An expendable soldier knows how to fight a war. And you just declared war on the wrong man's wife."
