Chapter 13 - The Open Horizon

Three weeks later.
The private medical transport plane banked gently over the coast of North Carolina, the blue waters of the Atlantic sparkling under the morning sun.
Inside the quiet, pressurized cabin, Rosalie sat in an ergonomic wheelchair secured near the window. Her casts had been replaced with lightweight braces. Her skull fracture was healing cleanly, though a thin, pale scar ran along her hairline—a permanent reminder of the night her world had shattered.
Alexander knelt beside her chair, handing her a warm cup of herbal tea.
"Doctor says your physical therapy is ahead of schedule," he said, offering a warm, genuine smile. "Two more months, and you’ll be walking without the cane."
Rosalie smiled, taking the cup, her fingers warm against his. "And where will I be walking to, Captain Sinclair?"
Alexander reached into his uniform pocket and produced a set of brass keys. "A cottage on the coast of Maine. Four acres of pine trees, a private beach, and not a single Miller or Vance within five hundred miles."
Rosalie took the keys, tears shimmering in her eyes. She leaned her head against Alexander’s shoulder, exhaling a long, trembling breath that released months of agony. "It’s finally over, isn't it?"
Alexander stroked her hair gently. "The Millers are gone, Rose. The county is clean."
He held her close, letting her find peace in the quiet hum of the aircraft’s engines.
Across the cabin, Major Elena Rios sat at a folding workstation, monitoring encrypted transmissions. Her face suddenly grew rigid as a red alert notification flashed across her tablet screen.
Elena looked up, meeting Alexander’s eyes. She gave a slight, almost imperceptible shake of her head.
Alexander gently kissed the top of Rosalie’s head, waited until she had closed her eyes to rest, and then quietly stood up, walking back toward Elena’s station.
"What is it?" he asked in a low whisper.
Elena turned the screen toward him.
It was an intercepted audio file, decrypted from an offshore server based in Geneva. A synthetic, distorted voice played through the encrypted headphones:
*"Protocol Blackout was an inconvenience, but the Archon Network remains operational. Captain Alexander Sinclair believes he has severed the head of the snake. He does not know that Catherine Miller was merely one of seven patrons. Prepare the secondary contingency. Target the Sinclair package the moment they touch down in Maine."*
Alexander stood motionless, staring at the green waveforms pulsing across the dark monitor.
The battle for Blackwood County was finished. His mother-in-law was broken. His wife was breathing.
But the war had only expanded into the shadows of a far larger horizon.
Alexander looked back toward Rosalie, sleeping peacefully in the sunlight by the airplane window. Then, he looked down at his satellite phone, his thumb hovering over the secure command dial.
"Elena," Alexander said, his voice flat, resolute, and merciless.
"Sir?"
"Reroute our flight path. We aren't going to Maine."
"Where are we going, Commander?"
May you like
Alexander’s eyes turned cold as winter ice.
"We’re going hunting."
