Chapter 4 - Broken Glass and Blood Money

The Sinclair home on the outskirts of Blackwood County was surrounded by yellow police tape fluttering in the midnight wind. The front door hung loosely on its hinges, splintered around the lock where a heavy tactical boot had kicked it open.

Alexander stepped across the threshold, his flashlight cutting through the darkness. The scene was sickeningly fresh. Broken porcelain from Rosalie’s favorite teacups littered the hardwood floor. In the living room, a dark, dried pool of blood stained the Persian rug near the fireplace. Handprints smeared the white wall—Rosalie had tried to drag herself away toward the back door before they dragged her back.

Hayes stepped through the broken doorway behind him, holding a handheld infrared scanner. "Two intruders, maybe three, based on boot-tread patterns. Standard commercial steel-toe boots. Not military. They ransacked the study, the master bedroom, and the basement. They were looking for hard drives."

"Did they find them?" Alexander asked, his voice hollow and lethal.

"No," Hayes said, walking toward the stone fireplace. "Your wife was smarter than them."

Hayes tapped a specific stone on the mantle—three taps, a pause, then a firm inward push. With a soft click, a concealed metal compartment behind the chimney breast swung outward. Inside sat a matte-black military-grade hard drive and a hand-written notebook wrapped in heavy plastic.

Alexander took the notebook. He opened the plastic wrap. The faint scent of Rosalie’s lavender perfume rose from the pages, hitting him like a physical blow to the sternum. He closed his eyes for a second, swallowing the suffocating grief, before opening the journal under his flashlight beam.

The handwriting was rushed, jagged with terror:

*April 14: Julian isn't just skimming from the Miller Foundation. The Blackwood Port redevelopment project isn't a shipping expansion. It’s an unregistered transshipment hub. Containers labeled 'Agricultural Machinery' are moving through dock 17 without customs inspections. Mother knows. She signed the foreign wire transfers.*

*April 22: I followed the paperwork to an offshore account in the Caymans under the name 'Aegis Holding.' It’s linked to an international private defense contractor—Vanguard Global. Julian is laundering money for them. But worse... they are trafficking something else. Missing personnel files from local orphanages and migrant holding centers. My God, Julian what have you done?*

*May 2: Catherine confronted me. She didn't deny it. She smiled at me. She told me: 'Rosalie, you were always too soft, just like your father before he had his little car accident.' She threatened Alexander. She said if I went to the state police, Alexander would come home from his deployment in a zinc box.*

Alexander’s vision blurred with red. The puzzle pieces locked together with horrifying clarity. Rosalie’s father—Catherine’s late husband, Richard Miller—had allegedly died in a single-vehicle rollover eight years ago. Rosalie had always suspected foul play, but had never possessed proof. Now, Catherine and Julian were running an illicit syndicate right out of Blackwood's port, shielded by bought politicians and protected by mercenary muscle.

"Hayes," Alexander said, his voice dropping to a terrifying calm.

"Commander?"

"Upload this drive directly to the Pentagon's Directorate of Special Investigations. Mark it under Operation Iron Maiden. I want Vanguard Global’s domestic defense contracts frozen within sixty minutes. Flag every Miller Foundation asset for international money laundering and treason."

"And Julian Miller?" Hayes asked.

"Where is he right now?"

Hayes checked his tactical tablet. "According to our wiretaps on the Miller estate, Julian left the hospital an hour ago. He's currently at 'The Obsidian Room'—a high-stakes private club down at the Blackwood harbor. Celebrating, by the looks of it. He brought four bodyguards."

Alexander checked his sidearm, racking the slide of his Sig Sauer with a sharp, metallic snap. "Good. Let's go crash his celebration."
