Chapter 9 - The Fall from Grace

The following morning, Gwen couldn't accept the reality of her new station.

Delusional with desperation and convinced that her personal presence could restore her social standing, she took an Uber—paid for with the last twenty dollars in Chloe’s checking account—to the Royal Palms Country Club in Paradise Valley.

She wore her best Chanel suit, her pearl necklace, and oversized sunglasses, marching past the valet toward the dining terrace where the Friday ladies' luncheon was in full swing.

"Good afternoon, ladies," Gwen announced, forcing a bright, trembling smile as she approached a table of four women she had lunched with every week for four years.

The conversation at the table died instantly.

Eleanor Sterling, the wife of a federal judge and the undisputed matriarch of the Paradise Valley elite, slowly lowered her iced tea glass. She looked at Gwen not with anger, but with the cold, absolute disgust one reserves for a roach on a banquet table.

"Gwen," Eleanor said, her voice cutting through the breezy terrace. "What are you doing here?"

"I... I came for lunch, of course!" Gwen laughed nervously, pulling out an empty chair. "Don't listen to those horrible lies online! Sienna is an evil, vindictive girl who fabricated everything! You all know me! You know the Montgomery name!"

"We know the Montgomery name was built on your late husband's failed debts," Eleanor said smoothly, not flinching. "And we know that your daughter-in-law has been footing the bill for your entire life while you repaid her with violence. The board revoked your privileges yesterday afternoon. You are trespassing."

"Eleanor, please!" Gwen begged, her voice cracking, dropping the aristocratic facade. Tears began to carve ugly tracks through her thick foundation. "I have nowhere to go! Christian’s accounts are locked! We’re staying in a terrible motel! Just let me sit with you... let me explain!"

"General Manager!" Eleanor called out, raising a single, manicured hand without looking back at Gwen.

Within ten seconds, the club’s security director and two staff members approached.

"Mrs. Montgomery," the security manager said firmly, his hand resting near his radio. "You have been formally trespassed from this property. You need to leave immediately, or we will have the Paradise Valley police escort you off the grounds in handcuffs."

The entire terrace—dozens of wealthy patrons, business executives, and socialites—watched in dead silence as Gwen Montgomery was physically steered off the premises.

As she was escorted toward the front gates, a flatbed tow truck pulled up to the club's main entrance. On the back of the bed was Christian’s leased BMW M8, seized directly from the motel parking lot an hour earlier for contractual default.

Gwen stood on the scorching sidewalk outside the country club gates, the July heat beating down on her silk suit, realizing with sickening certainty that the world she had stolen was gone forever.
