Chapter 13 - An Open Reckoning

Six months later.
The ocean breeze rolled off the Pacific, carrying the scent of salt and eucalyptus through the open terrace doors of Sienna’s newly acquired villa in Laguna Beach.
She stood on the balcony, dressed in comfortable linen trousers and a soft cashmere sweater, a glass of crisp Sauvignon Blanc in her hand. Below her, the waves crashed methodically against the jagged rocks, constant and unbothered by the chaos of the world.
Her life had transformed with terrifying efficiency.
Apex Global had restructured, and with the guidance of the succession trust, Sienna had officially taken a seat on the board of directors as the primary equity shareholder, securing the legacy her father had built. The Scottsdale house had been sold for a record profit, completely scrubbing the Montgomery stain from her personal history.
The Montgomery family had dissolved into the dirt.
Christian had taken a plea deal: five years at the state correctional facility in Florence, Arizona, with mandatory restitution that would garnish every paycheck he would ever earn after release. Vanessa Wright had vanished with her child, legally changing her name and blocking all contact.
Gwen and Chloe were living in a run-down one-bedroom apartment in West Phoenix, surviving on state assistance and whatever minimum-wage income Chloe could scrape together working the register at an off-brand dollar store. The country club, the silk dresses, the Miami vacations—they were relics of a stolen dream that had finally collapsed into ash.
Sienna took a slow sip of her wine, feeling the cool ocean air against her face. The faint scar on her lip had faded to a nearly invisible line, a subtle reminder that weakness was a choice she would never make again.
Her phone vibrated on the glass patio table.
She glanced down, expecting an update from Elena regarding the Tokyo supply route.
Instead, the screen displayed a call from an *Unknown International Number*.
Sienna picked it up, pressing it to her ear. "Sienna speaking."
For a long moment, there was only the sound of faint satellite static, followed by the heavy, measured breathing of an older man.
"You handled the Montgomery situation with remarkable precision, Sienna," a deep, gravelly voice said. The voice was cultured, European, carrying an accent she couldn't immediately identify.
Sienna's eyes narrowed. Her spine went perfectly straight. "Who is this?"
"Someone who has been watching your father’s trust for twenty-five years," the man replied, a chilling amusement in his tone. "You thought Richard Montgomery and Arthur Vance were the only ones involved in your father's business, didn't you?"
Sienna felt the temperature on the terrace drop ten degrees. "Identify yourself."
"Enjoy your wine in Laguna, my dear," the voice whispered. "Because the real debt your father left behind... wasn't financial. And the men who brought that plane down twenty-five years ago just found out where you're sitting."

The line went dead.
Sienna stood frozen on the balcony, the phone still pressed to her ear. The ocean waves continued to crash against the rocks below, but the peaceful horizon suddenly looked dark, vast, and infinitely dangerous.
She lowered the phone, looked down at her hands, and saw that they weren't trembling.
A slow, cold smile crossed her face.

She tapped David Vance’s number into the keypad.
"David," she said the moment he picked up. "Get Marcus Briggs on the line. We have work to do."
