Chapter 8 - Corporate Counter-Strike

When the official Apex Global press release dropped at 2:00 PM, the internet did what it always does when presented with indisputable receipts: it turned with horrifying velocity.
The video Gwen had posted was swiftly buried under an avalanche of verified evidence. The company didn't just issue a bland corporate denial; they released the police intake report showing Sienna’s split lip, the transcript of Gwen demanding thirty thousand dollars for luxury personal spending, and the legal filing detailing the systematic theft of corporate funds.
Within two hours, the hashtag #GwenMontgomeryExposed was trending across Phoenix.
The local news stations that had prepared sensationalist segments on "corporate cruelty" immediately flipped the narrative. By evening, local news anchors were broadcasting segments titled: *“Entitled In-Laws Exposed: The Dark Reality Behind High-Society Grifting.”*
At the Scottsdale country club where Gwen had spent the last five years posturing as an aristocratic grand dame, the fallout was instantaneous.
The club's board of directors held an emergency closed-door meeting at 4:30 PM. Gwen’s honorary membership, which had been maintained exclusively through Sienna’s corporate sponsorship package, was revoked unanimously.
At that very moment, Gwen, Christian, and Chloe were sitting in a cramped, two-bedroom extended-stay suite on the outskirts of Tempe. The room smelled of industrial disinfectant and stale grease. Gwen was staring at her phone screen, her face drained of all color, watching the comment sections implode.
*"Look at this greedy old parasite!"* one comment read. *"She was getting 30k a month and hit her daughter-in-law because she wanted more? Lock her up!"*
*"Her daughter Chloe drives a leased Mercedes paid for by her sister-in-law while pretending to be an influencer. Absolute trash family."*
*"I know Christian Montgomery. He runs a fake logistics company that’s basically an empty desk. Complete con artist."*
Gwen dropped the phone onto the cheap polyester bedspread, trembling from head to toe. "They... they put the police report online. Everyone is seeing it. Cynthia from the bridge club just texted me... she told me never to speak to her again."
Chloe was crying hysterically in the corner. "My Instagram account is being flooded with thousands of hate comments! Brands are dropping me! The boutique that gave me free clothes just sent an email demanding I return everything or they’ll sue me for breach of contract! Christian, do something! Fix this!"
Christian didn't answer. He was sitting at the laminate dining table, staring blankly at a legal packet that had just been hand-delivered by a process server twenty minutes prior.
It was a formal criminal summons from the Maricopa County Grand Jury.
Charges: *Two counts of felony forgery, one count of grand larceny, and one count of identity theft.*
His bail was set at two hundred and fifty thousand dollars. If he didn't surrender to the central booking facility by 9:00 AM Friday, a bench warrant would be issued for his arrest.
"I can't fix this," Christian whispered, his voice hollow, dead. "There is no fixing this."
His phone buzzed. It was a text from Vanessa Wright:
*“The sheriff just posted an eviction notice on my door. The locks are being changed tomorrow. Don't ever come near me or my son again, you sick liar. If you show up here, I'm calling the police.”*

Christian buried his face in his hands and began to weep.
