Chapter 2 - The Cold Cut

Christian didn’t hesitate. His hand shot forward, fingers curling into the collar of Sienna’s silk blouse, ripping the top mother-of-pearl button clean off. It bounced against the hardwood floor with a faint, mocking click. His breath smelled of stale black coffee and the lingering musk of cheap cologne.
"What did you do to her?" he roared, his face mottled red, veins bulging against the pale skin of his throat. "Have you lost your goddamn mind, Sienna? Look at my mother! Look at what you did!"
On the floor, Gwen had already slipped into the performance of a lifetime. She curled her legs inward, clutching her hip, letting out a series of theatrical, wheezing gasps. "She pushed me, Christian! I only asked her for the household expenses, and she attacked me! Look at me! I think she broke my hip!"
Sienna didn’t flinch. The copper taste of blood was warm against her tongue. She took a slow breath, tasting her own split lip, feeling the swelling begin to throb beneath her cheekbone. She didn't drop her gaze. She didn't offer an excuse. Instead, she lowered her chin, her eyes locking onto Christian’s furious face with the precision of an industrial laser.
"Take your hands off me, Christian," she said. Her voice wasn’t loud, but it possessed a dead, resonant weight that instantly sucked the oxygen out of the living room. "Take your hands off me right now, or the next call isn't to a marriage counselor. It’s to the Phoenix Police Department for felony domestic battery."
Christian blinked, startled by the complete absence of terror in her posture. Usually, Sienna retreated. Usually, she swallowed her pride, murmured an apology for the sake of domestic tranquility, and transferred an extra five thousand dollars just to stop the shouting.
"Don't you threaten me in my own house!" he snarled, though his grip loosened just enough for her to jerk back, freeing herself.
"This isn't your house," Sienna said flatly, straightening the lapel of her blazer. "This deed was purchased under my family trust six months before our wedding. You know that. Your mother knows that. And the only reason either of you sleeps under this roof is because I allow it."
"You monstrous little bitch!" Gwen shrieked from the floor, abandoning her fake hip agony just long enough to hoist herself up onto her elbows, eyes spitting venom. "You see how she talks to you, Christian? She has no respect! She thinks because she makes a few dollars, she owns us!"
Sienna ignored the shrieking matriarch entirely. She reached into her handbag, retrieved her phone, and tapped the screen twice.
A high-fidelity audio recording echoed throughout the vaulted ceilings of the high-end living room:
*“...You ungrateful woman.”*
*Crack.*
The unmistakable, violent sound of Gwen’s palm striking Sienna’s face played with crystal clarity.
*“In this family, you obey!”*
The room froze. Christian’s jaw went slack. The flush on his neck receded, replaced by an uneasy, sickly gray.
Gwen’s mouth hung open mid-wail. Her theatrical sobs vanished, cut off instantly by the indisputable evidence drifting out of the phone's speaker.
"You... you recorded me?" Gwen whispered, her voice trembling now—not with pain, but with genuine panic.
"My corporate security app records ambient audio automatically whenever my emergency gesture is triggered," Sienna explained coldly, wiping a drop of crimson from her chin with the back of her wrist. "And it backs up directly to a private cloud server managed by our legal division. You struck me, Gwen. You split my lip in unprovoked physical assault. And you, Christian, just put your hands on my throat while defending a violent offense."
Christian swallowed hard, taking an instinctive step back. "Sienna... wait. Let’s not be dramatic. My mother is an old woman. You know how she gets when she's stressed. She didn't mean it like that. You provoked her by withholding the household money!"
"Household money?" Sienna let out a sharp, humorless laugh that cut through the room like shattered glass. "She demanded thirty thousand dollars for botox, country club dues, and designer dresses. That ends today."
Without breaking eye contact with her husband, Sienna unlocked her mobile banking portal. Her fingers moved with practiced efficiency.
*Primary Amex Black: Canceled.*
*Gwen Montgomery’s Supplementary Platinum: Revoked.*
*Christian Montgomery’s Unlimited Corporate Debit: Terminated.*
*Monthly recurring allowance: Deleted.*
Within three seconds, four separate confirmation dings chimed across the sleek glass table. At the same moment, Christian’s phone vibrated in his pocket. Then Gwen’s phone lit up on the couch.
"What did you just do?" Christian whispered, pulling out his device. His screen flashed bright crimson text from the card issuer: *Account Suspended by Primary Holder.*

"I took away my money," Sienna said, sliding her phone back into her purse. "From this second forward, not one cent of my labor touches either of your hands. If you want thirty thousand dollars, Gwen, I suggest you get a job at a retail counter. And Christian? Pack a bag. Because if you aren't out of my sight in ten minutes, I'm pressing full assault charges on both of you."
