Chapter 7 - The Smear Campaign

Three days later, the retaliation began.

Sienna was sitting in the executive boardroom of Apex Global Infrastructure, running a quarterly supply chain review with twenty senior directors across Europe and North America, when her chief of staff, Elena, slipped quietly into the room. Elena’s face was grim. She leaned down and placed an iPad directly in front of Sienna.

"We have an issue," Elena whispered. "It’s trending locally on LinkedIn and Facebook. It’s starting to pick up traction in business circles."

Sienna glanced at the screen.

It was a video recorded in what looked like a budget motel room. In the frame sat Gwen, her hair unbrushed, wearing a cheap, oversized sweater, clutching a handkerchief. Beside her sat Chloe, looking pale and tearful.

The caption read: *ELDER ABUSE AND CORPORATE GREED: HOW APEX GLOBAL’S DIRECTOR SIENNA MONTGOMERY THREW HER SICK MOTHER-IN-LAW ONTO THE STREET.*

In the video, Gwen sobbed directly into the camera:

*"...I treated her like my own daughter for five years. I cooked for her, I cared for her home while she traveled the world for Apex Global. And the moment I became ill and asked for help with my medical bills, she beat me, kicked me down the stairs, and used her corporate lawyers to throw my son and me onto the concrete without a penny. Apex Global promotes women in leadership, but this is the kind of monster they put in charge of their divisions..."*

The video had already garnered sixty thousand views, hundreds of shares, and a barrage of outraged comments calling for Apex Global to terminate Sienna’s contract. Local news outlets were already tagging the company's PR department.

At that exact moment, the boardroom doors swung open.

Arthur Vance—the firm’s Chief Executive Officer and a legendary figure in corporate logistics—stood in the doorway. His expression was unreadable.

"Sienna," Arthur said, his voice echoing across the silent boardroom. "My office. Now."

The twenty directors in the room held their breath, keeping their heads down. In corporate America, a public PR scandal involving domestic abuse and elder neglect was a fatal bullet. Executives had been fired for far less.

Sienna closed her laptop calmly, picked up her iPad, and followed Arthur down the executive corridor into his sprawling corner office.

Arthur shut the heavy oak doors, walked over to his desk, and turned to face her. "I have thirteen reporters from the Arizona Republic and local CBS affiliates emailing our communications team. They’re asking if Apex Global endorses elder abuse. What the hell is going on, Sienna?"

Sienna didn’t panic. She didn't offer a tearful explanation. Instead, she took out a encrypted thumb drive from her pocket and placed it on Arthur's desk.

"That drive contains three files, Arthur," she said, her voice steady and commanding. "File one: the continuous audio recording of the incident, proving Gwen Montgomery attacked me unprovoked when I refused to transfer thirty thousand dollars of personal allowance. File two: the emergency protective order issued by the Maricopa County Superior Court based on photographic evidence of my injuries. File three: an audit conducted by David Vance showing that my estranged husband attempted to forge commercial liens using Apex Global corporate vendor contracts."

Arthur’s eyes narrowed. He plugged the thumb drive into his workstation and clicked through the files.

For two minutes, the only sound in the office was the audio of Gwen’s venomous voice shrieking *“In this family, you obey!”* followed by the violent slap, and then Christian’s voice lunging forward.

Arthur leaned back in his leather chair, exhaling a long, slow breath. The tension in his jaw melted into cold, corporate rage.

"They tried to weaponize our corporate brand to extort you," Arthur stated, his eyes hardening.

"Precisely," Sienna said. "And by dragging Apex Global's name into a defamatory public smear campaign, they didn't just commit civil libel against me. They committed corporate tortious interference against this firm."

Arthur picked up his desk phone and pressed line one.

"Get me Robert Sterling, head of our crisis communications, and our outside defamation counsel," Arthur barked into the receiver. "We are issuing a full press release in forty-five minutes. Attach the police report, the protective order, and the audio file. And instruct counsel to file a ten-million-dollar defamation suit against Gwen Montgomery and Chloe Montgomery by the end of the business day."

He hung up, looking at Sienna with genuine respect.

"Go home, Sienna. Take tomorrow off to prepare for your divorce hearing. Apex Global will handle the public execution."
