Chapter 8 - Sabrina's Ruin & The Criminal Trial

The federal courthouse in Alexandria was surrounded by barricades and television satellite trucks from every major news network in the world.

The trial of *The United States v. Preston Lyle and Sabrina Crane* had captivated the global public like no legal proceeding in recent history. It had everything: vast fortunes, shadowy defense dynasties, illicit affairs, clinic ambushes, and murder-for-hire plots.

Inside Courtroom 3B, Sabrina Crane sat at the defense table, looking like a ghost of her former self.

Her expensive blowouts were gone; her hair was pulled back into a greasy, unkempt ponytail. She wore a drab navy suit provided by the public defender’s office after her family's accounts were seized under civil racketeering statutes. She wept continuously into a paper napkin, refusing to look across the room at Preston.

Preston sat five feet away from her, shackled at the ankles and wrists, wearing a bright orange prison jumpsuit. His face was gaunt, his eyes sunken and surrounded by dark circles. The arrogance that had once defined his every movement had decayed into a twitching, paranoid terror.

The presiding judge, the Honorable Evelyn Carter, banged her gavel.

"The jury has reached a verdict," Judge Carter announced, her voice echoing through the packed courtroom.

Reese sat in the front row of the gallery, flanked by Victoria Strand and Augustus Sutherland. She was six months pregnant now, her bump beautifully defined beneath a structured navy wool coat. Her presence in the courtroom was commanding, quiet, and completely unshakeable.

The jury foreperson stood up, holding the verdict sheets.

"On Count One: Conspiracy to Commit Premeditated Murder... how do you find the defendant, Preston Lyle?"

"Guilty," the foreperson declared.

A quiet murmur rippled through the gallery. Preston closed his eyes, his head dropping toward his chest.

"On Count Two: Attempted Premeditated Murder... how do you find the defendant, Preston Lyle?"

"Guilty."

"On Count Three: Murder for Hire under Interstate Commerce Statutes... how do you find the defendant, Preston Lyle?"

"Guilty."

"On Counts Four through Eight: Wire Fraud, Embezzlement, Witness Tampering, and Aggravated Healthcare Fraud... how do you find the defendant, Preston Lyle?"

"Guilty on all counts."

Judge Carter turned her stern gaze toward Sabrina Crane.

"On Count Nine: Accessory to Premeditated Murder After the Fact... how do you find the defendant, Sabrina Crane?"

"Guilty."

"On Counts Ten through Twelve: Money Laundering and Conspiracy to Defraud the United States... how do you find the defendant, Sabrina Crane?"

"Guilty on all counts."

Sabrina collapsed onto the table, sobbing hysterically. "No! Please! I didn't know he was going to hire hitmen! I was just trying to protect my money! Please, Your Honor!"

Judge Carter did not blink. "Silence in this courtroom."

The judge adjusted her spectacles, looking down at the defense table with absolute disdain.

"In my thirty-two years on the federal bench," Judge Carter said, her voice cutting through the stifled sobs, "I have rarely witnessed such depraved indifference to human life, motivated by nothing more than shallow greed and pathologically unchecked vanity."

She turned first to Sabrina.

"Sabrina Crane, for your role in laundering embezzled corporate funds and acting as an accessory to the attempted destruction of a human life, I sentence you to twenty-two years in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release. You are ordered to pay eighteen million dollars in restitution to Altair Capital."

"Twenty-two years?" Sabrina shrieked as federal marshals pulled her to her feet. "I'll be fifty years old! You can't do this to me!"

They dragged her through the side door, her screams fading into the holding cells below.

Then, Judge Carter turned her cold eyes to Preston Lyle.

"Preston Lyle. You plotted to forcibly abort your own child and surgically mutilate your wife. When that failed, you orchestrated an armed terrorist-style assault inside a civilian hospital from your prison cell."

She leaned forward, tapping the gavel lightly against the wood.

"There is no place in civilized society for a man of your character. I sentence you to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. You will serve this sentence at the United States Penitentiary, Administrative Maximum Facility in Florence, Colorado."

The words struck Preston like a physical hammer.

*ADX Florence.*

The Alcatraz of the Rockies. A concrete tomb buried in the Colorado desert, where the nation's most dangerous terrorists and mob bosses spent twenty-three hours a day in total sensory deprivation.

"No..." Preston whispered, his voice trembling. "No, please... not Florence... please..."

"Take him away," Judge Carter ordered.

As the marshals pulled Preston to his feet, he twisted violently, fighting against the heavy chains that bound his hands and feet. He locked eyes with Reese, who stood calmly in the gallery.

"Reese!" he screamed, tears and saliva flying from his lips. "Reese, please! Tell them! Tell them you still love me! Don't let them bury me alive! Reese!"

Reese looked at him.

She didn't speak. She didn't scowl. She didn't offer a single tear.

She simply raised her right hand, touched the wedding ring finger that was now bare, and turned her back on him, walking out of the courtroom into the blinding light of the courthouse rotunda.
