Chapter 13 - Whispers in the Federal Pen

Deep within the bowels of the United States Penitentiary, Administrative Maximum Facility in Florence, Colorado—known universally as ADX Florence—time had lost all meaning. There were no windows in Cell Block H. There was no sound except for the distant, hollow echo of steel doors slamming shut and the mechanical hum of air filtration units pumping sterile oxygen into the concrete tombs. Preston Lyle sat on his stainless-steel bunk, dressed in a faded orange jumpsuit that hung loosely off his shrunken, malnourished frame. His beard was overgrown and gray, his eyes hollowed out by endless months of sensory deprivation. He hadn't heard a human voice in weeks, save for the robotic clank of the food slot opening twice a day to push through a gray, flavorless meal block. The failure of the Sterling & Vance ultimatum had reached him through a smuggled, coded newspaper clipping left intentionally by a corrupted guard three days ago.

*Rese Sutherland wins again. Assets secured. Vance arrested.* The words had echoed inside Preston’s skull like a hammer striking an anvil until he thought his brain would fracture. He was broken. He was defeated. He was truly buried alive. Suddenly, the heavy steel door of his cell—a door that was programmed to open only for armed tactical guards—clanked loudly. The electronic lock disengaged with a sharp *buzz*. Preston blinked against the harsh fluorescent glare of the corridor, shielding his eyes with his skeletal hands. A man stepped into the cell. He wasn't wearing a corrections officer’s uniform. He wore a crisp, unmarked federal inspector’s suit, his face obscured by the deep shadows of the corridor ceiling. The man closed the cell door behind him, locking it manually with an override key card. Preston scrambled backward onto his bunk, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. "Who... who are you?" Preston rasped, his voice cracked and ruined from disuse. "Did Reese send you to finish me?"

The man smiled faintly, stepping closer into the dim amber light of the cell. He pulled a small, secure digital tablet from his inner pocket and tapped the screen. A audio file began to play. The voice echoing from the speaker made Preston’s blood run instantly cold. It wasn't Reese. It was a voice he hadn't heard in five years—a deep, gravelly tone belonging to a shadowy Swiss financier whom Preston had thought dead since the collapse of his European accounts. *“The game isn't over, Preston,”* the audio recording whispered. *“You built a house of cards, but the foundation was built on something much older and much darker than the Sutherlands.”* Preston stared at the man in horror. "You... you’re supposed to be in Zurich. The SEC seized your bank in 2021." The man chuckled softly, sliding the tablet onto the stainless-steel table. "The SEC seizes what we let them seize, Preston," the man replied smoothly. "You thought you were the mastermind of the Lyle dynasty. But you were merely a pawn in a much larger international syndicate. And now that your little wife has destroyed your assets, she has inadvertently exposed our primary gateway into the Sutherland estate."

Preston’s breath hitched in his throat. "What... what do you want with her?" "We don't want her, Preston," the man said, leaning down until his eyes locked onto the broken inmate’s pupils. "We want the child. Aurelia Sutherland holds the biometric encryption keys to the old Swiss trust accounts that your grandfather-in-law buried fifty years ago. And since you failed to break the mother, our operatives on the outside are going to take a more... direct approach." Preston’s mind spun into a terrifying vortex of adrenaline and dread. For all his hatred of Reese, for all his venomous plots, the thought of someone touching his bloodline—of someone snatching that little girl from the safety of the Sutherland estate—triggered a primal, jagged panic in his chest. "No..." Preston whispered, his hands trembling violently. "No, you can't... she's my daughter..." The man stood up, straightening his lapels with cold indifference. "She was your leverage, Preston. Now, she's collateral damage." The heavy steel door unlocked with a sharp click and swung open, leaving Preston alone in the dark, screaming into the concrete void as his worst nightmare came back to life.
