Chapter 14 - The Breach at the Estate

The midnight rain lashed furiously against the reinforced ballistic glass windows of the Sutherland estate in Great Falls. Inside the master nursery, Reese Sutherland sat in a velvet rocking chair, cradling a sleeping Aurelia against her chest. The storm outside was violent, the wind howling through the ancient willow trees along the Potomac River like a pack of wolves. Yet inside the room, an unnatural, oppressive stillness hung in the air. Reese’s instincts—the razor-sharp survival senses that had kept her alive through poison, betrayal, and attempted murder—screamed a silent warning. She gently laid Aurelia down in her crib, pulling the soft cashmere blanket over the toddler's chest. She walked silently across the room, her hand resting on the hidden panic button embedded in the mahogany wall panel. Before her fingers could press the switch, the estate’s entire electrical grid died instantly.
The glowing digital clocks flickered out. The humming air filtration system fell silent. Total, pitch-black darkness enveloped the mansion. In the next second, a dull, concussive *boom* reverberated from the ground floor—the sound of an industrial breaching charge blowing the heavy oak front doors off their hinges. Reese didn't panic. She moved with cold, lethal grace, pulling a suppressed Walther PPK pistol from a hidden magnetic compartment behind the nursery bookshelf. She chambered a round with a soft, mechanical *clack*. Outside in the hallway, heavy combat boots stomped against the antique hardwood floor. Muffled shouts echoed up the grand staircase.

"Sweep the second floor! Target is the child! Leave no witnesses!" a gruff, tactical voice barked through a radio communicator. Reese stepped away from the nursery door, positioning herself in the deep shadows beside the doorway, her pistol raised and steady at eye level. The doorknob turned slowly. The door creaked open, admitting a slice of pale moonlight through the rain-streaked window. A heavily armed operative in tactical black gear, his face covered by a reinforced ballistic mask and night-vision goggles, stepped cautiously into the room. He swept his submachine gun across the empty bed. "Room clear—" the operative muttered into his comms. He never finished the sentence. Reese stepped out of the shadows like an avenging angel, her pistol pressed directly against the side of the operative’s helmet. *Puff-puff.* Two suppressed shots rang out, muffled and deadly. The operative collapsed silently onto the plush Persian rug without a sound. Reese didn't hesitate. She stripped the dead man’s tactical vest, grabbing his spare magazine, encrypted radio, and night-vision headset. She strapped the headset over her eyes, the world transforming into a glowing green matrix of heat signatures and movement.
Stepping out into the grand hallway, she saw three more tactical operatives advancing toward the East Wing where Augustus Sutherland’s private quarters were located. Calvin Mercer was down—she could see a thermal heat signature lying motionless near the top of the stairs, surrounded by a pool of cooling blood. A cold, absolute rage bloomed in Reese’s chest—a fire so hot and pure it burned away every trace of fear. She raised the submachine gun she had taken from the dead operative, her finger resting lightly on the trigger. "You picked the wrong house," Reese whispered into the dark, and opened fire. The hallway erupted in muzzle flashes and the deafening roar of automatic gunfire, shattering the night as the ultimate war for the Sutherland dynasty reached its bloody, explosive crescendo, leaving the fate of mother and child hanging by a razor-thin thread as the storm raged on outside.
