Chapter 27 - Blood on the Terracotta

The secondary explosion sent a violent shockwave rolling through the grand library, shattering a row of antique stained-glass windows and raining glittering shards of colored glass across the polished marble floor. Reese reacted with instantaneous, predatory reflexes. She shoved Preston hard against the heavy iron safe, sending him crashing into the shelving unit with a grunt of pain, before dropping low into a tactical combat squat behind a carved mahogany oak desk.
The heavy oak doors of the library burst inward, splintering into a thousand jagged pieces as a flash-bang grenade rolled across the threshold.
*Flash! Boom!*
A blinding white light and a deafening concussive roar filled the room, stripping away vision and hearing for a crucial, agonizing fraction of a second. But Reese had survived enough black-ops ambushes to operate entirely on muscle memory. She clamped her eyes shut, turning her head away from the blast, and rolled hard to the left, her fingers gripping the butt of her Browning 9mm.
Through the haze of thick, gray smoke and choking white dust, tactical boots slammed against the flagstones. Three figures clad in matte-black urban combat gear and wearing unmarked night-vision helmets surged into the room, their suppressed submachine guns sweeping the perimeter in synchronized arcs.
"Clear the left flank!" a harsh, filtered voice barked over tactical comms.
Reese didn't wait for them to spot her. From her prone position beneath the desk, she raised her pistol and fired twice through the wooden panels.
*Bang! Bang!*
The first round caught the lead operative square in the Kevlar-reinforced vest, spinning him backward with a heavy thud. The second round shattered the second operative's knee joint, dropping him to the floor with a agonized scream that was instantly cut short as he hit the marble.
Before the third operative could pivot his weapon toward her, a familiar, raspy voice echoed from the shattered doorway.
"Drop the weapon, or I turn your skull into gravel," Calvin Mercer rasped.
The heavy silver head of Calvin’s cane slammed down hard across the back of the third operative's neck with sickening force. The man went limp instantly, collapsing like a felled tree onto the dusty floor. Calvin stepped over the unconscious body, his breathing heavy, his suit jacket torn at the shoulder, but his aim with a suppressed Glock steady as a rock.
"Miss Sutherland, are you intact?" Calvin called out, his sharp eyes scanning the smoking room before fixing on Reese as she rose slowly from behind the desk.
"I'm alive, Calvin," Reese panted, wiping a streak of soot and sweat from her forehead. She looked over at the iron safe where Preston Lyle had been pinned.
The space was completely empty.
The heavy iron safe door stood wide open, its internal digital display flashing a bright, pulsing green. Preston was gone. In his place on the floor lay a single, blood-stained handkerchief and the portable decoding console, its screen now displaying a static geographical map of Zurich with a single flashing red coordinate pinned directly beneath the Swiss National Bank.
"He slipped out through the private sub-basement tunnel while the flash-bang went off," Calvin observed grimly, limping over to inspect the open safe. He reached inside, pulling out a heavy, leather-bound ledger stamped with the gold seal of the Sutherland family crest. "He didn't just escape, Miss Sutherland. He took the master ledger for the Zurich vault's biological assets."

Reese stared down at the flashing red coordinate on the console screen, her jaw tightening until her teeth ached. The game had shifted from defense to an absolute, unyielding hunt. Preston thought he could use the biological master ledger as a bargaining chip to secure his survival across Europe. But he had fundamentally underestimated the depths of Reese's iron will.
"Get the backup helicopter prepped for an immediate transatlantic flight to Zurich," Reese commanded, her voice dropping into a tone so cold and absolute that even Calvin gave a respectful, immediate nod. "We're going to shut down the vault permanently—and if Preston gets in our way, we bury him with it."
