Chapter 22 - The Subterranean Siege

The sudden plunge into total darkness was accompanied by the sharp, deafening snap of an EMP pulse echoing through the subterranean foundations. The high-tech server racks, the biometric monitors, and the glowing blue vials inside the vault flickered once and died instantly, leaving behind an unnatural, oppressive stillness.

"Secure the perimeter!" one of the Syndicate operatives shouted in the darkness, the sound of heavy tactical boots scrambling across the concrete floor.

In the split second of absolute confusion, Reese didn't hesitate. Years of surviving corporate assassinations and underworld ambushes had taught her to operate entirely in the blind. She dropped flat to the floor, rolling hard to the left just as a burst of suppressed automatic gunfire chewed through the concrete wall right where she had been standing a heartbeat earlier.

"Reese!" Helena’s voice rang out from across the vault, tinged with a sudden edge of sharp irritation. "You cannot hide from your own blood!"

Reese ignored her, crawling swiftly across the rough floor until her hand brushed against Calvin’s limp form. She slid her fingers along his neck, feeling a strong, steady pulse. Good. He was alive. She reached into her tactical belt, pulling out a pair of military-grade thermal goggles, and pulled them down over her eyes. The subterranean laboratory instantly transformed into a stark landscape of glowing heat signatures: the cool blue of the concrete floor, the bright orange heat trails of the two armed operatives sweeping the room, and, standing near the center, the warm, distinct glow of Helena holding a terrified Aurelia.

"Mommy?" Aurelia’s small, tearful voice echoed through the dark chamber.

"I'm here, baby. Don't move. Close your eyes," Reese whispered softly into the comm-link frequency only her specialized earpiece picked up, praying the child would hear her over the ringing in her ears.

Reese raised her Browning 9mm, her thermal display painting the lead operative’s chest in brilliant amber. She squeezed the trigger twice. *Thud-thud.* The suppressed rounds hit their target with lethal precision. The operative dropped his weapon and crumpled heavily to the floor, his thermal signature rapidly cooling against the concrete.

The second operative spun around, raising his rifle toward Reese’s position, but before he could pull the trigger, a heavy, metallic crash echoed from the shadows behind him. Calvin, despite his severe injuries, had dragged himself toward the secondary hydraulic control panel and slammed his hand down on the emergency manual override lever.

The massive steel blast doors of the subterranean laboratory began to slide shut with a deafening hydraulic screech, cutting off the escape route and trapping Helena and her remaining guard inside the chamber.

"Traitorous old fool!" Helena snarled, shoving Aurelia roughly toward the second operative as she drew a sleek, pearl-handled Walther PPK from her coat.

"Don't you dare touch her!" Reese screamed, leaping forward from her concealed position just as the emergency backup floodlights flickered back to life, illuminating the room in a harsh, blinding glare.

Reese closed the distance in a matter of seconds, slamming her shoulder directly into Helena’s midsection. The older woman grunted, stumbling backward and dropping her weapon as she collided with the edge of the steel table. Aurelia slipped from Helena’s loosening grip, tumbling onto a soft pile of tactical gear on the floor.

"Aurelia! Run to the spiral stairs!" Reese yelled over the roar of the closing blast doors.

The little girl scrambled up, her small legs carrying her as fast as she could toward the dark opening of the staircase. The remaining Syndicate operative raised his rifle to track her, but Reese lunged forward, grabbing the barrel and shoving it upward just as he pulled the trigger. The bullet blew a massive hole in the concrete ceiling, raining white dust and debris down upon them.

Reese didn't waste a second. She drove her heel hard into the operative’s knee joint with a sickening crack, following up with a brutal elbow strike to his temple that sent him crashing unconscious to the floor.

She spun around, panting heavily, her eyes locking onto Helena Sutherland. The matriarch was picking herself up off the floor, her immaculate silver hair slightly disheveled, her dark eyes blazing with an unholy, incandescent fury. She didn't look defeated; she looked like a cornered apex predator preparing for one final, devastating strike.

"You think you've won because you managed to scratch an old woman, Reese?" Helena hissed, wiping a streak of dust from her cheek as she reached slowly into her coat pocket. "The Zurich vault isn't a place. It's a protocol. And the moment I press this transmitter, every asset, every account, and every sleeper agent under our command activates across North America."

May you like

Reese raised her pistol, pressing the cold steel barrel directly against Helena’s forehead. Her hands were rock steady.

"Press it," Reese whispered, her voice colder than the concrete beneath their feet. "And let's see who dies first."
