Chapter 5 - The Public Trap

Reese’s prediction came true twelve hours later.
At two o’clock the following afternoon, national cable news networks broke their scheduled programming with a banner alert:
**EXCLUSIVE: OUSTED CEO PRESTON LYLE BREAKS SILENCE ON SUTHERLAND DYNASTY CONSPIRACY.**
Preston had secured an emergency live interview with Marcus Vance, the host of *The Capitol Lens*, a sensationalist political and financial talk show known for its combative ratings.
Preston appeared on screen wearing a sharp blue suit, his hair neatly combed, his face pale and haggard—an intentional look designed to elicit maximum public sympathy. He sat in the Washington studio with a trembling lower lip and hands folded politely on the desk.
"Thank you for having me, Marcus," Preston began, his voice quivering with theatrical sorrow.
"Mr. Lyle," Vance said, leaning over the desk. "Over the past forty-eight hours, the internet has exploded with allegations against you. An leaked audio recording suggests you attempted to force your wife into an involuntary termination of her pregnancy. You’ve been ousted from Lyle Holdings. The Sutherland family has effectively declared war on you. How do you respond?"
Preston took a deep, trembling breath, looking directly into the camera lens.
"Marcus... I am a broken man," Preston said, blinking back tears. "What the public heard on that audio was a heavily edited, AI-generated fabrication created by the Sutherland family’s private intelligence apparatus."
Across the country, millions of viewers tuned in.
"For four years," Preston continued, "I believed I was married to an ordinary, beautiful woman named Reese. I loved her with all my heart. Lyle Holdings was built on my sweat, my eighty-hour workweeks. But three months ago, Reese became distant. She began suffering from severe paranoia and delusions."
He paused, dabbing at his eye with a handkerchief.
"When she became pregnant, her mental state deteriorated rapidly. She threatened self-harm. She refused medical care. I brought her to Dr. Ellison’s clinic in Georgetown not to hurt her, but to save her! I wanted the best psychiatric and prenatal care money could buy. But the Sutherland family—an untouchable, shadowy defense dynasty that believes they are above the law—didn't want their family name tarnished by mental illness."
Preston leaned toward the camera, his voice rising in righteous indignation.
"They stormed that private clinic with armed mercenaries! They kidnapped my pregnant wife! They doctored the audio to ruin my reputation, stole my company through corporate loopholes, and now they are holding Reese hostage behind armed guards in Great Falls!"
He slammed his fist against the desk, tears streaming down his cheeks.
"I don't care about the company! Keep the billions, Augustus Sutherland! Just give me back my wife! Give me back my unborn baby! Reese, if you’re watching this... don't be afraid of them! I will fight to the Supreme Court to bring you home!"
In the control room, Vance’s producer was signaling through his headset: *Ratings through the roof. Keep him talking.*
"Those are damning allegations, Mr. Lyle," Vance said, his face grave. "Are you saying the Sutherland family used private military force on American soil?"
"Yes!" Preston cried. "And I have submitted a formal petition to the Department of—"
Suddenly, the studio’s audio cut out.
A high-pitched tone squealed through the broadcast. The digital screens behind Marcus Vance flickered, the show’s blue-and-gold logo disintegrating into static.
"What's happening?" Vance muttered, touching his earpiece. "Did we lose the feed?"
"We're being overridden!" the director screamed in Vance’s ear. "Someone has patched directly into our satellite uplink! We can't cut the broadcast!"
On millions of televisions and smartphones across America, the static cleared.
The screen split into three live feeds.
On the left was Preston, looking panicked in the D.C. studio.
On the right was a crisp, high-definition video feed marked with a Department of Justice timestamp: **GEORGETOWN CLINIC – INTERNAL SECURITY RECOVERY – UNEDITED.**
The video played with flawless clarity. It showed Preston entering Dr. Ellison’s private office two hours before Reese had even arrived at the clinic.
Preston was seen sliding a thick manila envelope across the desk. Ellison opened it, revealing stacks of banded one-hundred-dollar bills.
*“Five hundred thousand,”* Preston’s voice boomed through every speaker in America, crystal clear, uncompressed. *“The paralytic must be mixed into the standard sedative. If she dies on the table, it looks like an unpredictable allergic reaction. If she survives, make sure the uterine lining is destroyed beyond repair. I won't have a Sutherland bastard tying me down once I take over her trust.”*
Ellison's voice replied: *“And Miss Crane?”*
*“Sabrina will be in the recovery suite waiting for me. Just get it done.”*
In the studio, Preston's jaw dropped open. His face turned from pale to an ashen, sickly gray.
"Turn it off!" Preston screamed, lunging out of his chair toward the studio cameras. "Turn it off! That's illegal! That's classified!"
Then, the center feed activated.
Reese Sutherland sat behind a mahogany desk, flanked by the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia and the Assistant Director of the FBI.
"Good afternoon, Marcus," Reese said, her voice cutting through Preston’s screams like a scalpel. "And goodbye, Preston."
The U.S. Attorney stepped forward, looking straight into the lens.
"At twelve-fifteen today, a federal grand jury returned a six-count indictment against Preston Lyle for attempted premeditated murder, conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud, wire fraud, and witness tampering. Federal marshals are currently entering the studio."
The studio doors behind Preston burst open with a deafening crash.
Six armed United States Marshals, tactical vests strapped tight, swept onto the broadcast set, their weapons drawn.
"Preston Lyle! Hands where we can see them! On the ground! Now!"
"No! Wait! It's a setup!" Preston shrieked, backing away toward the host's desk, knocking over chairs. "Marcus, help me! They're framing me!"
Marcus Vance scrambled backward out of his chair, holding his hands up, completely abandoning his guest.
A marshal tackled Preston to the floor, driving his knee into Preston's spine. The crunch of Preston’s nose hitting the studio flooring was broadcast live to fourteen million viewers.
"You're under arrest, Lyle."
The handcuffs clicked shut with cold, mechanical finality.
As they dragged him to his feet, blood dripping from his nose, his custom tie torn, Preston locked eyes with the camera feed where Reese was still watching.
"Reese!" he screamed, his voice turning into a feral howl of pure madness. "Reese! I'll kill you! Do you hear me? I will kill you and that bastard child! You won't survive this!"
Reese looked at him through the screen without a shred of pity, without a tremor in her hands.

She simply closed her laptop.
