Chapter 9 - The Resignation

Two weeks had passed since the night the glass tower fell.

The media firestorm had been unprecedented. The front pages of the *New York Times*, *The Wall Street Journal*, and every major tabloid had splashed the faces of Victoria and Carter Sterling across their covers: **"THE SOCIALITE MONSTERS: BILLIONAIRE'S FIANCÉE CHARGED IN ATTEMPTED CHILD MURDER."**

The Vance Empire had emerged stronger than ever, its stock surging as Julian ruthlessly absorbed the remnants of the Sterling shipping dynasty.

Meanwhile, in the tranquil, sun-drenched gardens of the Vance estate, life had returned to a quiet rhythm.

Elena sat on a stone bench beside the koi pond, her left arm resting comfortably in a soft cotton sling. The heavy surgical bandages had been replaced with smaller dressings, and the color had returned to her cheeks.

"Vroom, vroom!"

Noah came running across the lush green lawn, holding a brand-new wooden race car that Julian had personally commissioned from a master craftsman in Switzerland.

"Look, Elena!" Noah beamed, skidding to a halt beside her bench and holding up the toy. "Daddy put your name on the bottom! Look!"

Elena smiled, her heart warming as she took the toy with her right hand. Etched into the polished mahogany wood beneath the chassis was a tiny gold inscription: *For Noah’s Guardian Angel — Elena.*

"It’s beautiful, Noah," Elena murmured, smoothing down his unruly chestnut curls. "You're getting so fast with it."

"Daddy says when your arm gets all better, we’re going to take the big boat to the island with the pink sand," Noah said excitedly, bouncing on his heels. "And you're going to teach me how to swim like a fish!"

Elena’s smile faltered slightly, a quiet ache settling behind her ribs.

"Noah, sweetheart," Elena said gently, kneeling down so she was eye-level with the little boy. "Remember how I told you that sometimes, people have jobs they have to finish, and then they have to go to new places?"

Noah’s face instantly fell, his bright brown eyes clouding with sudden panic. "No. You live here now. Daddy said so!"

"I don't live here, Noah," Elena said softly, fighting the lump in her throat. "I was hired by an agency. My job was to help with the house. But now... now that things are safe, it’s time for me to go back to school."

"No!" Noah yelled, throwing his tiny arms around her neck, burying his face into her good shoulder. "You can't go! I won't let you! Daddy! Tell her she can't go!"

Elena held the boy tightly, closing her eyes as a tear escaped down her cheek. She loved this child. In the span of three months, Noah had stolen a piece of her heart she didn't know existed.

And then there was Julian.

Over the past two weeks, the billionaire had been a constant presence. He hadn't retreated to his boardroom. He had personally checked on her dressings, sat with her during Noah’s bedtime stories, and looked at her with an intensity that made her soul shiver.

But Elena was not a fool. Julian Vance was a titan of industry, a man who moved markets with a signature. She was an orphan with a high school diploma and a nursing school dream. She would not allow herself to become a fleeting novelty in his gilded cage, or stay long enough to become the subject of cruel mansion gossip.

An hour later, Elena walked into the servants' annex, carrying a modest leather suitcase with her right hand. She had packed her few belongings, leaving her pressed uniform neatly folded on the dresser.

On the bedside table sat a white envelope addressed to Julian Vance: her two-week notice and a formal letter of resignation.

She took a deep breath, picked up her bag, and walked toward the staff exit.

"Where do you think you're going, Miss Ross?"

Elena froze.

Standing at the end of the private corridor, leaning casually against the doorframe, was Julian Vance.

He wore a soft charcoal cashmere sweater, the sleeves pushed up to his elbows, and tailored dark trousers. He looked breathtakingly handsome, stripped of his corporate armor, his slate-gray eyes locking onto her suitcase with dangerous intent.

"Mr. Vance," Elena said, her pulse quickening. "I... I left a letter in my room. Dr. Harrison signed off on my light-duty discharge this morning. My shoulder is healing well. I called my agency."

Julian pushed off the doorframe and walked toward her. Each step was slow, deliberate, and commanding. He didn't stop until he was standing inches away, his towering frame casting a long, protective shadow over her.

He reached down, gently taking the handle of the suitcase from her hand, and set it aside on the floor.

"You're resigning?" Julian asked, his voice low and husky.

"It’s for the best," Elena whispered, unable to look away from his piercing eyes. "Noah is safe now. The threat is gone. I need to get back to my life, Julian. I don't belong in a palace."

Julian stepped closer, his hand reaching out to tenderly cup her cheek. His thumb brushed across her cheekbone, wiping away a stray tear with incredible gentleness.

"Do you really believe this is just a palace to me, Elena?" Julian asked softly. "Before you jumped in front of that glass, this house was a mausoleum. It was an empty, gilded prison where my son and I lived in cold silence."

Elena’s breath hitched. "Julian..."

"You bled for my son," Julian murmured, his gaze dropping to her lips before rising back to her hazel eyes. "You looked at five hundred thousand dollars and tore it to pieces to protect his honor. You fought an armed man with a broken shoulder. In two weeks, you have given this home more warmth, more love, and more life than it has seen in four years."

He took her uninjured right hand, bringing it to his chest, pressing her palm directly over his beating heart.

"You don't belong to an agency, Elena," Julian said fiercely. "And you sure as hell don't belong anywhere where I can't protect you. Noah loves you. And God help me... I am falling in love with you."

Elena gasped, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. "You... you can't love me. We come from different worlds, Julian. The media, the board, your family—"

"Let them talk," Julian interrupted, his voice ringing with absolute certainty. "I destroyed an entire dynasty in twelve hours because they dared to threaten what is mine. If the world has an issue with the woman I choose to stand beside me, I will buy the world and silence it."

Julian leaned down, resting his forehead against hers. "Stay, Elena. Not as a maid. Not as an employee. Stay as the mistress of this house. Stay as Noah’s mother. Stay as my equal."

Tears spilled over Elena’s eyelashes, but this time, they were tears of overwhelming joy. The walls of self-preservation she had built around her heart for twenty-four years crumbled into dust.

"Yes," Elena breathed, wrapping her right arm around his neck. "I'll stay."

Julian smiled—a radiant, breathtaking smile that transformed his stern face—and captured her lips in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed their fates forever.
