Chapter 8 - The Web Unravels

Twelve hours later, the afternoon sun flooded the private boardroom of Vance Enterprises in Midtown Manhattan.
The room was the pinnacle of corporate power: forty floors above the city, surrounded by bulletproof glass, featuring a forty-foot conference table made of polished ebony wood.
Seated around the table were the senior partners of the Sterling Logistics conglomerate, two senior prosecutors from the New York District Attorney's office, and Victoria Sterling.
Victoria had spent the last twelve hours attempting to salvage her empire. Dressed in a conservative black Chanel suit with her hair tightly pinned, she had summoned her family’s high-powered defense attorneys. She sat with her spine rigid, her face an unreadable mask of cold defiance.
"This is an outrage, Julian," Victoria said smoothly, looking across the table at Julian Vance. "My brother is clearly mentally unstable. He acted entirely on his own! He had gambling debts; he was desperate. I had absolutely no knowledge of his deranged plot against Noah! You cannot hold me responsible for the actions of a rogue family member."
Julian sat at the head of the table, flanked by Marcus and a team of cyber-forensic analysts. He looked entirely rested, impeccably dressed in a charcoal three-piece suit. He didn't look angry; he looked like an executioner preparing to drop the blade.
"A rogue actor, Victoria?" Julian asked, his voice smooth and lethally calm. "Is that the story your PR firm prepared this morning?"
"It’s the truth!" Victoria insisted, leaning forward, her eyes glistening with false tears. "Julian, I loved you! I loved Noah! How could you believe I would ever harm our future family?"
Julian nodded slowly to Marcus. "Show her the truth."
Marcus tapped a keystroke on the central console. The massive digital screens lining the boardroom wall flickered to life.
"When your brother installed the military-grade signal jammer on my terrace," Julian explained, "he made one fatal mistake. He assumed my estate operated on standard commercial Wi-Fi protocols. He didn't know that three years ago, following an attempted kidnapping, I hardwired an offline, closed-circuit fiber-optic feed directly into the wall conduits."
Victoria’s breath caught in her throat.
The screen illuminated with crystal-clear, 4K footage of the terrace from the previous night, timestamped at 8:43 PM.
The footage showed the rear of the towering crystal glass pyramid.
On the screen, Carter Sterling was seen kneeling near the base, anchoring the monofilament wire to the rear support pin. But he wasn't alone.
Standing right beside him, acting as a lookout, was Victoria.
The camera captured her face in high-definition clarity. She looked directly at five-year-old Noah playing on the floor below. Then, she leaned down, handed Carter a pair of wire cutters, and whispered something in his ear with a cold, triumphant smile.
Seconds later, Victoria walked out to the terrace, stepped near the velvet runner, and used the sharp, pointed heel of her designer shoe to kick the loosened support pin, triggering the collapse before Carter reeled in the tripwire.
A collective gasp echoed through the boardroom. The Sterling family attorneys blanched, silently closing their briefcases and sliding them away from their client.
"No..." Victoria whispered, her face turning the color of chalk. "That’s... that’s fabricated. It’s an AI deepfake!"
"There’s more," Julian continued, his voice devoid of mercy.
Marcus pressed another key.
An audio recording filled the room—a phone call intercepted thirty minutes before the gala:
> *"Make sure the kid is underneath it when it drops, Carter. If he’s just injured, Julian will spend the rest of his life hovering over him. He has to be gone. Once Noah is out of the picture, Julian will marry me within the month to secure the merger. The Vance trust will be ours."*
Victoria’s voice echoed off the soundproof glass walls like a death sentence.
The District Attorney stood up from the other side of the table, turning to two plainclothes detectives waiting by the door.
"Victoria Sterling," the prosecutor announced formally. "You are under arrest for attempted aggravated murder of a minor, conspiracy to commit murder, corporate sabotage, and filing a false police report. You do not have the right to bail."
Victoria shot up from her chair, her manicured nails digging into the mahogany table. "Julian! You can't do this! You need our shipping lines! The European trade deal will collapse without the Sterling fleet!"
Julian leaned back in his leather chair, his slate-gray eyes watching her with utter indifference.
"I bought forty-nine percent of your family’s distressed debt at 6:00 AM this morning, Victoria," Julian said quietly. "By noon, the Sterling Logistics board voted to liquidate your family’s controlling shares. You don't have a shipping fleet anymore. You don't have an inheritance. You don't even have a home."
Victoria’s eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated horror as the reality of her total destruction crashed over her.
"You ruined me for a maid!" Victoria screamed, losing all sanity as the detectives grabbed her arms and wrenched them behind her back, snapping the cold steel handcuffs into place. "For a pathetic little servant who scrubs your floors! You threw away our empire for her!"
Julian stood up, towering over her as she was dragged toward the double doors.
May you like
"Elena Ross has more dignity, more courage, and more grace in her broken shoulder than you have in your entire bloodline," Julian said coldly. "Get her out of my sight."
