Chapter 7 - The Ambush in the Shadows

Before Marcus could reach the heavy brass handles of the double front doors, panic completely overrode Carter Sterling’s sanity.

With a wild, feral shout, Carter shoved Captain Miller aside, sending the burly detective crashing into the marble pillar. Carter bolted not toward the locked main entrance, but toward the side service corridor that led to the subterranean garage.

"Stop him!" Miller yelled, drawing his sidearm. "NYPD! Halt!"

"Don't shoot!" Julian commanded sharply. "He knows the layout. Marcus, cut him off at the loading dock!"

Carter sprinted down the dimly lit service hallway like a hunted animal. His mind was racing in a blind haze of terror. If Julian’s security team caught him, he knew he would never make it to a public courtroom. Julian Vance’s wrath was legendary; Carter would vanish into a private black site before the sun rose.

He reached the heavy metal fire door leading to the terrace utility access, slamming it open.

His plan was desperate: retrieve his hidden getaway bag from the utility locker and jump the western security perimeter where the sensors were temporarily disabled by the jammer.

He burst into the darkened storage room beneath the terrace—a cavernous, concrete space filled with extra banquet tables, rolled carpets, and towering crates of backup glassware.

"Looking for this, Mr. Sterling?"

A voice spoke from the shadows.

Carter whirled around, his chest heaving, his hand instinctively reaching into his coat pocket.

Elena was standing near the breaker panel, holding a heavy aluminum flashlight in her uninjured hand. She had slipped down the secondary service elevator while Carter was fleeing through the main corridor, anticipating his escape route from her three months of working the estate's floor plans.

"You," Carter snarled, pulling a sleek, snub-nosed revolver from his jacket. "You stupid, meddling little bitch! You should have died under that glass with the brat!"

Elena’s heart pounded against her ribs, but she held her ground, her flashlight beam illuminating Carter’s sweating, disheveled face. "You set the wire. You and Victoria. Why? Noah never did anything to you! He’s a child!"

"He’s an obstacle!" Carter spat, advancing toward her with the gun raised. "Julian was going to rewrite his will before the wedding! Everything—the entire twelve-billion-dollar trust—was tied up for the kid! My sister was going to get a pathetic five-million-dollar prenuptial allowance unless she produced an heir of her own! With the kid gone, Julian would have leaned on Victoria. Our family’s shipping company would have been bailed out!"

"So you decided to crush a five-year-old boy under eight tiers of crystal," Elena said, her voice shaking with disgust.

"It was supposed to look like an accident!" Carter screamed, his finger tightening on the trigger. "A faulty stage leg! The wind! Nobody was supposed to see the wire! But you jumped in the way! And now, you're going to take the blame for everything!"

Carter lunged forward, raising the gun to strike Elena across the face.

Elena didn't cower. Using the adrenaline surging through her veins, she swung the heavy aluminum flashlight with all the force of her uninjured right arm.

*CRACK!*

The flashlight struck Carter square across the bridge of his nose.

Carter howled in agony, stumbling backward, dropping the revolver onto the concrete floor. Blood sprayed from his shattered nose as he clutched his face. "You little whore! I'll kill you!"

He lunged at her again, his hands reaching for her throat. Elena tried to dodge, but her bandaged shoulder flared with blinding, agonizing pain, causing her to lose her footing. She hit the floor, and Carter’s heavy hands clamped around her neck, cutting off her air.

"Die!" Carter choked out, his eyes wild with madness. "Die like you were supposed to—"

Suddenly, a hand like an iron vise clamped around the back of Carter Sterling’s collar.

With a terrifying roar of pure, primal fury, Julian Vance lifted the two-hundred-pound man off Elena with one arm and hurled him across the concrete room.

Carter crashed into a stack of wooden folding tables with a bone-shattering crunch, collapsing into the splintered wood like a rag doll.

Julian didn't pause. He stepped forward, grabbed Carter by the throat, and hoisted him off the floor against the concrete wall, his knuckles digging into Carter’s windpipe until the younger man’s feet dangled in the air, kicking helplessly.

"You touched my son," Julian growled, his voice a low, vibrating demonic rumble. His slate-gray eyes were black with murderous intent. "And then you laid your hands on her."

"Julian... please..." Carter gasped, his face turning a deep, suffocating purple as his hands clawed uselessly at Julian’s iron grip. "Please... don't..."

"Julian, stop!"

Elena’s voice broke through the haze of violence.

Julian’s chest heaved. He slowly turned his head to look at her.

Elena was struggling to sit up against the wall, clutching her bleeding shoulder where the stitches had partially torn, her eyes pleading. "Don't kill him, Julian. If you kill him, he wins. Noah needs his father, not a man who went to prison for revenge. Let the law take him."

Julian stared at Elena. The raw humanity in her hazel eyes acted like ice water over his burning rage.

Slowly, deliberately, Julian lowered his arm, dropping Carter to the floor in a heap of coughing, groaning misery.

At that moment, Marcus and Captain Miller burst through the metal doors, firearms drawn, followed by four uniformed officers.

"Cuff him," Julian commanded, not taking his eyes off Elena. "Attempted murder. Conspiracy to commit murder of a minor. And corporate espionage. Take him out of my sight."

As Miller snapped the steel handcuffs onto Carter’s wrists, Julian crossed the room and dropped to his knees beside Elena.

Without asking, he slipped his strong arms beneath her trembling frame, carefully lifting her into his arms as if she were made of the finest, most precious porcelain.

"Julian... your shirt," Elena whispered weakly, leaning her head against his broad chest. "I’m getting blood on you again."

Julian looked down at her, his face softening with a tenderness that made her breath catch.

May you like

"Let it stain," Julian whispered. "You're safe now, Elena. I've got you."
