Chapter 2 - The Finger of Accusation

The opulent terrace fell into a silence so absolute that the faint hiss of the nearby champagne fountains sounded like a roar.
Elena was still pinned to the cold marble floor, her body trembling with adrenaline as she shielded five-year-old Noah beneath her torso. The sharp, bitter scent of spilled champagne mixed with the ozone of shattered electrical wiring and the metallic tang of fresh blood. Sharp shards of hand-cut crystal were buried in the fabric of her black vest, their razor edges pressing painfully into her shoulder blades. But she felt none of it. Her entire universe was narrowed down to the terrified boy in her arms and the rigid, trembling finger he had leveled at the crowd.
Standing directly in the boy’s line of sight was Victoria Sterling.
Victoria was the daughter of the Sterling shipping dynasty and, as of three weeks ago, Julian Vance’s fiancée. Draped in an ice-blue silk couture gown that clung to her statuesque frame like liquid frost, she held a half-empty champagne glass in one manicured hand. Her platinum-blonde hair was swept into an intricate chignon, and diamonds sparkled at her throat like frozen tears.
For one agonizing second, Victoria’s glossy pink lips parted in sheer disbelief. Then, her eyes narrowed, a flash of pure venom darting across her flawless features before vanishing beneath an expression of wounded innocence.
"Noah, darling," Victoria whispered, her voice honeyed yet laced with a tremor of shock that sounded entirely rehearsed. She pressed a manicured hand to her chest. "What on earth are you saying?"
"You pushed it!" Noah’s voice cracked, high and shrill, vibrating with the raw honesty only a child could muster. Tears tracked clean lines through the dust on his chubby cheeks. "You walked behind the velvet curtain! You kicked the gold pole with your pointy shoe! I saw you, Victoria! You looked right at me, and you kicked it!"
Gasps rippled through the gathering of Manhattan’s elite like a wildfire through dry brush. High-society matriarchs clutched their pearls, hedge fund titans lowered their crystal tumblers, and whispers erupted in a chaotic hum.
"Did the boy say Victoria?"
"She pushed the glass tower onto a child?"
"Good heavens, Julian’s own fiancée?"
"Silence!"
The command didn't just break the murmurs—it pulverized them.
Julian Vance stepped forward, parting the crowd like an approaching tempest. At thirty-four, the head of the Vance Empire was an imposing force of nature. Standing well over six feet, dressed in a bespoke midnight-black tuxedo, his chiseled face looked as if it had been carved from cold granite. His striking slate-gray eyes, usually calculating and distant, were burning with a terrifying, predatory fury.
Julian moved past the stunned guests until he stood over Elena and his son. In a single fluid motion, the billionaire dropped to one knee, ignoring the carpet of shattered crystal that ground beneath his leather shoes.
"Noah," Julian breathed, his deep voice thick with an emotion he rarely let the world witness. He reached out with large, steady hands, pulling the boy into his arms. "Are you hurt? Look at me, son. Are you bleeding?"
"Elena kept me safe, Daddy," Noah sobbed, burying his face into Julian’s neck, his small hands clutching the lapels of his father’s jacket. "She jumped on me! But it was Victoria! I saw her shiny shoe kick the pole!"
Julian lifted his head. His slate-gray gaze locked onto Victoria Sterling. The air between them dropped twenty degrees.
Victoria’s composure fractured. She took an involuntary half-step backward, her diamond earrings trembling. "Julian, please! You cannot possibly believe this! Noah is five years old! He’s traumatized, he was playing with his toys, he nearly died—he’s hallucinating from shock!"
"I am not!" Noah screamed into his father's shoulder. "She kicked it!"
"Julian, look at me," Victoria pleaded, her voice dropping into a soft, tearful purr as she reached for his arm. "I was standing near the terrace doors by the caviar station all evening! Ask anyone! Ask my brother! Why on earth would I do something so monstrous to the little boy who will soon be my own stepson?"
Julian didn't look at her outstretched hand. He didn't blink. His silence was far more terrifying than a shout.
Beneath them, Elena struggled to push herself up onto her knees. A sharp, stinging pain flared across her upper back. As she shifted, a collective gasp came from the security guards standing behind Julian.
The crisp white shirt beneath Elena’s black vest was rapidly blooming with deep crimson. A jagged, six-inch spear of heavy crystal was embedded in the meat of her left shoulder, having absorbed the direct impact that would have severed the little boy's spine.
Julian’s eyes dropped from Victoria to the young maid kneeling in the wreckage.
For the first time that evening, Julian Vance’s ruthless mask cracked. His eyes widened slightly as he took in the young woman’s pale face, her hazel eyes clouded with agony, and the pool of dark blood soaking through her uniform.
"You're bleeding," Julian said, his voice dropping into a low, gravelly register.
"The... the boy," Elena whispered, her voice trembling as she fought through the waves of blackness creeping into the edges of her vision. "Mr. Vance... is Noah okay? Are his hands cut?"
Julian stared at her. In his world, people bled for money, for power, or because they were caught in the crossfire of corporate greed. Nobody shed their own blood for another person without demanding a price. Yet here was a twenty-four-year-old girl, an employee he had likely passed in the halls without a second glance, asking about his son’s hands while a crystal dagger remained lodged in her back.
"Noah is uninjured," Julian answered softly. "Because of you."
"Good," Elena breathed. She gave a faint, fragile smile, and then her eyes rolled back into her head.
As her limp body tipped forward toward the sea of broken glass, Julian moved with lightning reflexes. Shifting Noah to one arm, he caught Elena’s falling form against his chest with the other, keeping her delicate skin from touching the razor-sharp floor.
"Call my private medical team to the penthouse suite immediately!" Julian roared, his voice echoing across the terrace like thunder. "And shut down the perimeter! Nobody leaves this estate! Not the guests, not the staff, not the caterers!"
His gaze snapped back to Victoria, whose face had drained of all color.
May you like
"And Victoria?" Julian added, his voice cold enough to freeze bone. "If a single camera angle on this terrace has been tampered with tonight, God help you."
